“This has not been an easy job to do. It has taken quite a bit of computer programming and we are fortunate to have some people who are very capable,” President of the company, Lee Bertman said.
He stated that in response to requests from a number of persons, Caribbean Cable Communications had undertaken to develop a calling card which uniquely could be used from Anguilla to call anywhere in the world; and from the United States, Canada and many other countries to call back to Anguilla at very favourable prices.
“It addresses the needs of people who travel,” Mr. Bertman said. “It also allows you to use the card from the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico…This is a chance to call back to Anguilla instead of paying one dollar and fifty cents for roaming charge. It takes 15 or 25 cents per minute to call back from any land line telephone.”
Mr. Bertman was at the time addressing the local media. During the briefing he introduced the newly-appointed Branch Manager, Damien Hughes, whom he said was doing a good job for the company.
“We are launching the Caribbean Chataway Calling Card. It is a lifeline to Anguillians both here and abroad and to visitors to Anguilla,” he said. “This Calling Card is somewhat unique in the sense that for 10 cents a minute from Anguilla persons can call the US and Canada. This is an opportunity where parents and students can save money and so we are launching the card with this as one of the strategies in mind.”
In using the card from Anguilla, a person needs to dial 462 1010 and then enters the pin number. When calling from the US and Canada, users will have to call a 1-800 number for access.
Mr. Hughes stated that there were no hidden charges, no monthly fee and no expiration date for the card. At present the card is only available for US$10 but can be topped up in $5 increments. The card will be available at various locations on the island but the topping up will only be done at the company’s office. Arrangements are being made for the card to be available over the internet.
During the press briefing, Mr. Bertman took the opportunity to announce that a new office building was under construction in the George Hill area and should be ready for September.
“The reason we have decided to go with the new building is that with the new products of internet, band width and telephone the company has grown substantially and we really need the room and technical facility,” he explained.
Mr. Bertman also spoke about the new tourism channel to be provided by Caribbean Cable Communications and operated on channel 20 by Donna Davis who is attached to the company. It will be a 45-minute feature on hotels, villas and restaurants in Anguilla involved in the sponsorship of the channel.
