Report On Indian Protest

A meeting was held at Carillion on Wednesday in regards to the Indian labour strike at the Viceroy Project. Attending were representatives from the Ministry and Departments of Labour and Immigration, Royal Anguilla Police Service, the Government Liaison Officer, Carillion and four workers representing the Indian workforce - Avshesh Kumar, Roop Narayan, Adalat, and Kunna Maharana.

The workers’ representatives stated that the living and working conditions are extremely satisfactory following the agreement made three months ago between their representatives and Carillion: the menu was satisfactory, recreation facilities were provided, housing conditions were satisfactory, and they were satisfied with the pay increase.

Two major issues were discussed. The workers’ representatives complained that the drinking water at the site was of concern to their health not because of the impurity of the water, but that Anguilla’s water is not good for them. They also indicated that medical care in Anguilla was also of concern.

The Indian representatives indicated that local doctors have informed them that Anguilla’s water is creating health hazards for them, but upon requesting the names of the local doctors so that the information could be verified, it was indicated by them that they could not provide these names.

The Government of Anguilla received test results of potable water at the Carillion Life Camp, conducted by an independent lab, and they are in keeping with international standards for drinking water.
