Over the past several days there have been a few serious road accidents which have resulted in injury and death but in one case, a driver was fortunate to walk away unharmed.

The first in the series of accidents occurred at West End on Monday July 16, when a truck crashed into a pick-up fatally injuring Lawrence “Balday” Fleming who was bout to enter his gate at the time. The other occupants in the pick-up were Fleming’s wife, Judith who was bumped around by the impact and his three-year-old grandson who was not hurt.

Fleming, 72, died two days later, on Wednesday, July 18, at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. His wife told The Anguillian this week that her husband was “badly broken up” by the crash of the truck into his vehicle.

The unfortunate incident highlights the grave danger being posed to residents in the West End/Long Bay area, where speeding trucks working on construction sites are spreading fear as they race along the road, some with little regard for other road users. The police are investigating the incident.

The funeral service for Fleming who is survived by his wife, thirteen children, three brothers and three sisters as well as other family, will be held on July 30.

There was a second accident on Thursday, July 19, on the Farrington Road where a rental car, said to have been driven by a non-national, collided with a utility pole and overturned. The lucky driver walked away unharmed.

The third accident claimed the life of one young man and injured a young woman. This accident occurred on the Queen Elizabeth Avenue on Saturday, July 21. There, Police, Ambulance and Fire Service Officers extracted 40-year-old Edward Hamilton formerly of Dominica, from an extensively damaged vehicle.

A police report stated that the vehicle A 7519, driven by Edwards, who resided at Cauls Bottom, was travelling from west to east on the Valley Bottom road. On reaching the junction at the Queen Elizabeth Avenue another vehicle A 7950 travelling from south to north along the avenue collided into the right side of A 7519.
Edward Hamilton who was the only occupant of A7950, died at the Princess Alexandra Hospital the following day, Sunday, July 22.

Karin Connor-Gumbs and Evon Connor, both of South Valley, were the occupants of A7950. They sustained minor injuries and were discharged from the hospital later on the day of the accident.

Yvette Webster of Cauls Bottom, a pedestrian, was struck by A7519. She sustained injuries to her face and was discharged from the hospital on Monday, July 23.
