The tournament, which marked the 10th Anniversary of the Lions Domino Club, was sponsored by Gemstar, a Canadian company which is supplying marble to hotel properties in Anguilla from various parts of the world. Calvert Carty, the company’s local manager, said that over the past nine years Sir Emile Gumbs had supported the Club and now on its 10th Anniversary Gemstar had come forward to be associated with the sporting body and with him to provide the competing trophies and to upgrade the sport in Anguilla.

Carty said that marble and crystal were very close to each other and because of the short time the company had to sponsor the domino competition it had to resort to procure crystal trophies for the presentations. He promised that next time the awards would be made from marble and he hoped that with this offer other teams would participate in the competitions.

“I am glad that you all have played fairly,” Mr. Carty went on. Congratulations to the St. Maarten team which came first and congratulations also to all the other teams. Gemstar is going to be associated with dominoes in Anguilla for a very long time.

In second place was the Police team; the Warriors came third and in fourth place were the Stars.

Sir Emile, who was an early domino player, said he still enjoyed the sport and was delighted to have been associated with the Lions Domino Club of South Hill for the past nine years. He was presented with a trophy for his longstanding support for the Club.

A trophy was also set aside for Gemstar for its generous contribution.
