Anguilla Swarming Fire Ants Off To Cuba

The Anguilla Swarming Fire Ants are on their way to Cuba. The Anguilla U-20 female footballers defeated the St. Kitts Sugar Girls by a score of 2 goals to 1 in the return leg of the CONCACAF U-20 qualifying competition. In a thrilling and keenly contested encounter the Fire Ants stunned the large crowd, at the New Town Playing Field, when Kennisha Xavier struck home the first goal as early as the 12th minute. St. Kitts equalized 10 minutes later to send their enthusiastic supporters into ecstasy. At half time the score was dead lock at one goal each with St. Kitts enjoying the better part of the half.

The Fire Ants came out blazing during the second half and mounted raid after raid on the St. Kitts goal. It wasn’t long before the Sugar Girls wilted under intense pressure and conceded a second but crucial goal. It was a result of a Clardeena Richardson free kick, from just outside the St. Kitts 18 yards box, which deflected from a St. Kitts defender and rocketed passed the St. Kitts custodian in goal.

Anguilla continued to dominate the second half and, even though they were not able to manage a third goal, their spirited and courageous performance was enough to see them through to the next round of the CONCACAF U-20 qualifying tournament. Jaynelle Lake, Melesa Anderson and Krystie Webster were outstanding up front, while Clardeena Richardson and Sharice Richardson controlled the middle, but it was outstanding defence of Shakkela Romney and Karisa Lake that stood out and was most significant in Anguilla’s victory. The Fire Ants now prepare for Cuba, Antigua and Barbados in a Zone which will be contested in Cuba in early August. Go Fire Ants Go.
