Fourth Annual School Leavers Conference: Students Admonished To Carry The Torch Proudly

On Wednesday June 20th, eighty five students were at Chandeliers for the Annual School Leavers Seminar. The seminar is an event sponsored by the Labour Department of the Government of Anguilla. The speaker was Miss Merlyn Rogers, who spoke passionately to the students about living well, meeting life head on and when confronted with challenges, see them as unlimited possibilities. She said graduates should seek to improve themselves whether abroad or at home. She advised students that, “employers still value employees who are skilled, those who embody honesty, integrity, team spirit, good work ethics and quality customer service.”

Facilitators at the seminar were Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks who spoke on professionalism and the need for workers to find their passion as well as see work as an extension of themselves and not just a job to be paid for. Candis Niles spoke of customer awareness and integrating all aspects of customer service. She reminded students that there is an internal as well as external customer in the workforce and for quality customer service to happen, both customers must be treated with equal respect. Mrs. Wilma Vanterpool stressed the need for good work ethics in the job market citing examples where persons who functioned on a less than ethical level met the results to their detriment.

Other presenters at the two day event were Mrs. Sandra York-Gumbs, Chris Richardson, Kathy Eggleston, and Dr. Linda Banks. Interactive sessions with the students were conducted by Mr. Brent Davis and Mr. Albert Lake. In addition to the Government of Anguilla, other contributors to the event were the Anguilla Social Security Board, The Anguilla Printers and Aronel.
