Blowing Point To Receive New Basketball Court

At a press conference held at the cricket pitch in Blowing Point on Wednesday, June 20 at 8:30, Mr. Mitchell Lake spoke about plans to build sports facilities in the Blowing Point Community. Mr. Lake is the founder of the Anguilla Tennis Academy, which is currently nearing completion. Heavy equipment was brought in for the removal of the various trees on the six acres of land acquired by Government. On this land, there will be a cricket field, football field, a basketball court and a community centre located underneath the stands.

Mr. Lake was quite excited about the progress being made. “We are here today to witness the removal of trees at the Blowing Point playing field. Part of the covenants of the Anguilla Tennis Academy in terms of building the world class facility is to replace the basketball court, and an area has been designated on the six acres in Blowing Point for us to begin construction of the this full size court. So this is a very exciting time for us because this has been actually one of the unfortunate circumstances in terms of holding back the project (ATA). Being able to find land to relocate the basketball court is a step in the right direction to bring closure to the completion of the Tennis Academy.”

There was no timeline given for the completion of the playing field, but Mr. Lake is eager to get things going on the basketball court which should be completed in four to five months. The Blowing Point community will certainly benefit from these facilities and will hopefully answer the call for more social infrastructure for adults and children. He also asked that the whole community get involved in contributing towards the development of the facility.

Mr. Rodney Rey, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development said, “We are excited about the development of a sports facility for the Blowing Point community. It is long overdue and, given the large number of persons in that community, we feel that we must provide for them a modern facility that meets the standards of the rest of the infrastructure in Anguilla. So, we intend to provide that for the Blowing Point and South Hill communities.”
