CELEBRATION OF YOUTH: Summer Is Approaching by Jason Allen

As the month of April is dwindling down, it is important to realize that summertime in nearly upon us. Around this time last year I did a series of articles about summer options for the youth. In these articles it was also mentioned that summertime is of great value as it is a time in which youth can really grow and learn more self realization.

There are various programs that have continually served the Anguillian community for many years and it is certain that these programs will continue to do so this summer. In the weeks leading to school closing, I plan to highlight some of these programs and provide information on how a child can register. Yet initially, parents and children should be thinking about possible options. There will be many programs such as the Youth Sailing School, The Library Program, Vacation Bible Schools, Camp Be Aware, Golf Summer Camp, Anguilla Tennis Academy’s Summer Camp, and many more.
With the rise in crime in Anguilla as of late, I cannot stress how important it is to channel children’s energy in a positive way. I encourage all children and parents to do research about each program that your child might be interested in. Also, it is important that parents make their children aware of the many options available to them. Whether you believe it or not, children do yearn for structure and organization. They would much rather prefer being involved in something than just sitting around the house all day growing roots. Children respond well to clearly delineated boundaries because as we all know, they certainly enjoy testing those boundaries. A structured schedule for a child during the summer will lead to a more fruitful and positive experience. It will also provide for less stress to the parent constantly wondering what to do about his or her child at home being bored.
I will do my best to research programs and place them here in this column, but I will need the assistance of the leaders and organizers of youth activities. If you know of any programs that a child can attend for the summer, please write to me at jallen@caribcable.com.
Until the summer begins, I wish all the children the best of luck with exams and final reports. Finish the year strong!
