This year’s sponsorship by the telecommunications company amounts to US$3,000. The Cable and Wireless sponsored triathalon will begin at Meads Bay Beach on Sunday, April 29 at 9.30 a.m. with a double 325-metre swim race (out and back around a buoy). This will be followed by fun and serious cycling races.
Cable and Wireless Marketing Manager, Giesel Francis, said the triathalon was one of the many ways in which the company was encouraging healthy habits, community work and the fostering of a spirit of togetherness.
“We are excited about sponsoring the event again and look forward to having many visitors in Anguilla, as in the past years, from St. Martin/Maarten as well as the local participants in the race,” she said. “We hope that a lot of people will come out to support the race at the start, along the road and at the finishing points and appreciate the work of the Optimist in the community.”
Acting President of the Club, Monica Hodge, expressed thanks to Cable and Wireless for the generous donation. “We are looking forward to seeing the folks coming out and participating in the events and hope that they will benefit from a boost in health and fitness,” she stated.
The triathalon will conclude at Elodias Beach Bar & Grill at Shoal Bay where cash prizes of US$400, US$300 and US$200 respectively will be presented to the first, second and third place winners in the serious individual and team categories. The winners in all other categories will receive trophies and medals.
The proceeds of the triathalon will go towards the Road Primary School where “a joy club” has recently been established. The money will be used for the work of the school. A number of other schools have benefited from this kind of assistance from the Optimist Club over the years.
This year, Harney Westwood & Reigels is a new sponsor of the triathalon
