A number of foreign students attending the primary schools in Anguilla, having difficulty learning the English Language, are benefiting from a quantity of materials presented by the Governor’s Office to the Education Department.

Acting Governor, Stanley Reid, made the presentation on March 23 to teachers Lisa Lloyd and Tracelyn Hamilton. Both of them are involved in a programme aimed at teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) mainly to Spanish-speaking students.

Mr. Reid noted that Anguilla was fast becoming a diverse society and it was important for all students to learn to communicate in English. He was delighted that it was possible for the Governor’s Office to contribute to that need.

The Governor’s Staff Officer, Joe Legg, stated earlier that the materials included books in Spanish, dictionaries, colouring books and a photocopier. They were purchased from funds made available by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to each of the Overseas Territories. The funds are to be used at the discretion of the Governor for worthy causes.

Mr. Legg said Governor Andrew George had arranged to purchase the materials after learning of the need of the ESL teachers to provide the best possible teaching of English to the students to enable them to learn a second language. He noted that the photocopier was the centrepiece of the materials and would be available for use in the programme by all the schools.

The short presentation ceremony was chaired by Sandra Fahie, Education Officer, Curriculum.
