One of the two-day workshops was held in Anguilla this week. Anguilla’s participants were Calvin Ruan, Head of the Mathematics Department at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School; Perry Richardson, a Mathematics Teacher there, and Allison Hughes, Principal of the Valley Primary School.
Others in attendance included Caron Weston of Antigua & Barbuda, Jillian Douglas-Phillip of the British Virgin Islands, Simon Sharplis of Dominica and Michelle Peters of Grenada, all Education Officers with responsibility for Mathematics in their respective islands.
Workshop Facilitator with the OECS Education Reform Unit, Dr. Henry Hinds, told The Anguillian: “What we are doing is revising work that has been done before for our children. We would like to ensure that all of them can deal with Mathematics as it is one of the subjects that would sometimes create some problems.
“The aim is to make Mathematics more exciting and enjoyable so that our young people can achieve. The approaches are to help children to understand what Mathematics is about and, instead of having ‘chalk and talk’ on the black board, we are trying to create activities that will engage children using areas like sport and every day life activities so that they can relate to what is happening.”
Dr. Hinds works in the Education Reform Unit of the OECS Secretariat in St. Lucia. “Our job is to improve the quality of education in all of the member islands and Mathematics is one of the areas we are working in,” he said.
