Prisoners Mount Art Exhibition

A number of inmates at Her Majesty’s Prison in Anguilla showcased their talent on Wednesday when they mounted an exhibition just outside the facility. They not only attracted members of the media and the general public but purchasers as well who thought their work was an excellent display of talent and commitment.

One of the outstanding artists is Stedroy Hodge who painted some large eye-catching beach and boat scenes, some of which were readily taken up by purchasers. “I have never done painting on such a large scale,” said the 18 year-old. “Right now I feel good that I have dome paintings as big as these.”

Glen Richardson and Rusking Romney produced some fine replicas of the island’s sleek racing boats. Richardson said his father was a boat-builder; he developed his love for boats from his dad, but learnt more about them from David Carty and was able to sell some boats to tourists and other persons. Romney, a plumber, commented that with the building of the little boats he had now learnt a new trade and felt good about it.

Another fine painter is Dennison St. Aime, 25, who feels proud of himself, having produced various paintings, even a self-portrait. “My Art Teacher, Kizzy, has now made me aware of my talent. Many thanks to her. I love working with her because she has given me a new name - artist,” he stated. Other prison inmates who did some very fine art work and bags are Glifton Gumbs, Verne O’Flaherty and Lamech Connor. They all said they enjoyed the art classes conducted by Kizzy Garconette, a tutor at the prison.

The prison inmates have also offered their thanks to Courtney and Carolle Devonish, John and Ian Pavolick, Digicel and Shari Erickson for their inspiration.
