OPen Letter From Cable & Wireless To Customers

Dear Valued Customer

The internet has grown by leaps and bounds, and by extension, the wealth of experiences we come across every day. However, some of these experiences are less desirable than others, and as a responsible Internet Service Provider (ISP) we are working to make your every day interaction with our service as pleasant as possible.

Junk mail also known as Unsolicited Bulk Email (UBE) is one of the annoying things many of our customers are not happy about. It is with this in mind that we seek your assistance in implementing authenticated SMTP.

What this essentially means is that whenever our computer sends an email, your email program or client e.g. Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger will need to verify who is sending the email; it will do this by sending your username and password to the server before sending the mail. It is very much like requiring your ID whenever you send a parcel to someone through the post office. The advantage of doing this is that all our customers will benefit from an improved internet experience as more ISPs like us implement Authenticated SMTP.

From August 31st 2006, we will be implementing Authenticated SMTP for our email service. It will also allow us to ensure that a legal requirement of our business is met “Unsolicited e-mail messages, including but not limited to, bulk commercial advertising and informational announcements, is explicitly prohibited”.
To ensure that you will be able to send email after August 31st 2006 you will be brought to a page listing all supported email programs and settings for turning on Authenticated SMTP.

Please configure your client using the appropriate instructions found at http://authenticatedsmtp.candwall.com.

If your email client is not listed, please send an email to authenticatedsmtp@candwall.com.

Cable and Wireless thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this important matter. If you have any questions or concerns, kindly contact us on 1 800 804 2994.
