ALTAMER RESORT COMMITTED TO STAFF DEVELOPMENT Resident Manager And Staff Undergo Training


Mr Carl Irish, Resident Manager & Chief Service Officer of Altamer Resort, just returned from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Irish studied and completed a one month certification in Hospitality Management. This course of study was a well rounded program consisting of Financial Management, Human Resources, Strategic Marketing, Managerial Behavior and Team Effectiveness, Revenue Management and Operations Decision Making.

Participants came from all around the world including Japan, China, England, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Dubai, Barbados, St Barths, Panama, Turkey, Egypt and Cyprus. The program also included five days of site visits to New York City’s top hotels and the United Nations Building. During the site visits Irish had the privilege of learning the day to day operations of these properties. These included managing cost in the food and beverage departments, managing staff cost and benefits in Human Resources sections and maximizing the use of space and time to maximize revenue generated.

Also, while on the site tour, Irish learned the importance of team work at its best, whereby the final products are totally dependent on all individuals working together as a team.

Irish commented, “The program at Cornell was very intense and well designed. I have gained invaluable knowledge about hotel and restaurant operations. I have a much better understanding of the Hospitality Industry and what it takes to be successful in this business. I am looking forward to applying the new knowledge and techniques at Altamer Resort.”

In a related story, as the computer has become an essential skill in today’s workplace, Altamer offered a cross disciplined group a week long course in computer training in Microsoft Excel, Word and using the Internet. The staff included Butlers, housekeepers, landscapers, maintenance, restaurant kitchen and wait staff. All participated in an introductory and intermediate level classes taught by Michelle Eggleton, Instructor at University of San Diego, San Diego, California, with over 20 years experience in computer training.

Participants who completed the Certification in Introductory Level Microsoft and Excel were Janet Depusoir, Rexford Fleming, Alexandre Lefante, Laval Richardson, Lavon Richardson, Maureen Carty, Sylvester Cadette and Don Romney.

Participants who completed the Certification in Intermediate Level Word and Excel were Franklyn Rogers, Preston Brooks, Sancia Price, Brian Reid, Ronald Lynch and John Richardson.

Asked about the training, Franklyn Rogers, Dining Room Manager, had this to say: “The training was very interesting, informing and useful for me. It will help me with organizing my staff schedules, food and beverage inventories and also my personal finances.”

Don Romney; Landscaping Supervisor, commented, “ I really appreciate the skills I have learned for using the Internet. I will be able to research and make better decisions in plant care and gardening in general.”

Carl Irish, commented on the staff training: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the team on their training accomplishments. We are committed to staff development, and we truly believe that our people are our GREATEST ASSETS. We will continue to develop our people so that they will have the tools and skills to be successful. Finally, I would also like to sincerely thank the entire Altamer Resort Team for their hard work and commitment over the past season.
