Open Letter From The U.S. Consular Warden |

Two New Wardens For Anguilla
One of Anguilla’s mysteries is the treatment of time. Careful research reveals the basic time unit (the AXA Unit) is thirteen years – say the time from the announcement of a project to its completion. When I first became the US Consular Warden on AXA Unit ago, what was attractive wasn’t the pay (there was and is none), but the opportunity as a Washington lawyer to be helpful to US citizens in their dealings with the mysterious intricacies of the US Government.

At the beginning, I thought most of the people coming to the Warden would be resident Expats. But, this proved not so. More and more Anguillian children are being born in St. Thomas or in the States, and this makes them US citizens from birth. Now, when we get a Consular visit from Barbados, we have as many as 75 children applying for or renewing their passports. The work now requires a Warden and two Deputy Wardens. We have two fine Deputy Wardens – Dennis and Diane Sheehan – he is a lawyer and she experienced in law office work, who have done a splendid and caring job.
The past thirteen years have given me an opportunity to welcome many Anguillians (and Expats too) into my home on the Sea Rocks and many opportunities to steer people to the right officers in Barbados. I’ve enjoyed it, but the AXA Time Unit is over, and I am resigning. The Sheehans will now be the wardens and I will stay on as their Deputy, keeping a supply of forms, and offering my home as a familiar venue for the consular visits.
Please call the Wardens Sheehan at 497-4828 (or in case of need call Dennis at his Law Office: 497-3470). You can still call Deputy Warden Kharasch at 497-4086. Remember to watch The Anguillian as always for the announcements of coming Consular visits; announcements will also be on all Radio stations. If you are an adult of 26 you can renew your US Passport by mail; otherwise you need to see a Consular officer for first or renewal of children’s passports. All visas are issued only from Barbados. And remember, you will soon now need either a US or an EU Passport or a Visa to travel to the US – the days of traveling on a British Certificate are passing.
With warmest thoughts to all, it is good to know you,
Robert Kharasch
