Paddy the Goat that Saved Rainbow Island
Written and illustrated by Jo-Anne Mason, Island Harbour, Anguilla
Published by Macmillan-Caribbean, Oxford, England

Paddy is different from all the other kids. He cannot baa. The senior goats are worried and it is decided that if Paddy cannot baa by his first birthday he must leave the herd and fend for himself on the Caribbean island of Anguilla and so his adventures begin.

This colorful hardback children’s book was written and illustrated by local artist Jo-Anne Mason and describes the perils and triumphs of a young goat and how he saves the island from a hurricane. Jo-Anne, a long time resident of Anguilla has endured several hurricanes and wrote the book in an effort to dramatize the effects a hurricane can have on the island and the people and creatures that live there.

The book was illustrated entirely with the use of a computer, “Corel Painter” and a Wacom digital draw pad. Images were created to resemble as closely as possible the island of Anguilla. The island is often referred to as “Rainbow City” by local residents because of the number of rainbows it experiences throughout the year.

When asked why she chose a goat as the subject of her book Jo-Anne replied, “Anguilla has many goats, almost as many goats as people and during a storm they experience the wind and rain at its worst. I thought it would show how everyone is affected by these events and how we must overcome it by helping one another through the difficult times.”

Jo-Anne lives with her husband Chris on the Sea Rocks in Island Harbour and continues to write and illustrate books. Paddy the Goat is available on the island at Something Special, CuisinArt, Bartlett’s and Anguilla Drug Store. Jo-Anne is happy to personally sign books by request.
