Government\\\'s Position On Junks Hole Project

There are reports that the developers of a proposed major golf course and residential project taking in Junks Hole, Captain’s Bay and Windward Point have been told by Government that their start-up date will have to be after 30-36 months. The project involves 500 acres of land and the provision of 2083 rooms. The developers are Urban Nicklaus Holdings and Property Markets Group.

The reported reasons for the requested delay are that Government has to take into consideration other projects that had already been approved and the consequent need for phasing and timing of all projects; that the work should not take place during the peak construction of the Flag and Viceroy projects. A substantial part of the reason is Government’s decision to stem the importation of large numbers of construction workers and the difficulties this would place on the island’s social services.

Further, it is understood that the owners of Flag Luxury Properties told Government that approval of a similar project would put theirs at risk in terms of viability and funding. They advised that if such approval was given their project would be discontinued immediately on September 23. The Government’s position is that it has to protect the jobs of some 500 workers at the Flag golf course, as well as all the contracts and loan commitments, and ensure economic and social stability.

According to information from a reliable government source this decision has not been acceptable to the developers of the proposed project who indicated that they would seek legal redress if necessary.

Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming, was expected to make a radio broadcast in connection with this matter on Thursday afternoon, September 29.
