ANGUILLA ART

Jo-Anne Mason

A resident artist on Anguilla for over 16 years, Jo-Anne Mason works in a variety of mediums and styles.

Born August 17, 1953 in Brooklyn N.Y.After leaving school, Jo-Anne pursued a career as a horsewoman and spent 20 years riding, training thoroughbred racehorses. During this time she also invented several horse related items including a patented bandage, a saddle for handicapped riders, an eventers bridle and an all fabric girth.
She began sculpting horses and animals in 1985 and had several successful shows and commissions including the West Virginia Breeder Association and The James Brady Professional Achievement Award.

Jo-Anne has lived and worked on Anguilla as an artist since 1992. Finding sculpture a difficult medium for island visitors to transport home she started painting with acrylic and latex using large canvas or board and eventually evolved into painting wall murals for various businesses and private home in Anguilla.
In 1996 she began creating images on a computer using various digital art programs to create graphics for web use, fine art illustrations for digital art and books.

Books

Seven Days on Anguilla
The images that make up the series “Seven Days on Anguilla” were digitally created using the program “Painter”. She produced them as images printed on paper and were so popular she decided to write a short description of the scenes and put them together into a small book.

Paddy the Goat that Saved Rainbow Island
The images for the Paddy book were created using the digital art program Painter. Jo-Anne wrote the book and then using scenes from around Anguilla created the illustrations. Paddy was published by Macmillian Caribbean in 2003.

Another childrens book this time illustrated in Adobe Illustrator is planned for 2010.

Stamp Series

Jo-Anne has created several stamp series for the Anguilla Postal Service.
The Rotary Club of Anguilla commissioned Jo-Anne Mason to create 5 stamps for the 100 year anniversary of the Rotary International. These images were created in Adobe Illustrator.

Social Security 20th Anniversary Stamps
On May 28, 2002 The Anguilla Social Security Board presented a 20th Anniversary stamp series created by Jo-Anne Mason.
The stamps were commissioned by Soical Security to highlight three areas of the S.S. functions to Anguilla society. Community Service, Employee Benefits and Benefits for all ages. The stamps portray images of Anguillians at work, play and in various age groups. These images were created in Adobe Illustrator.

Anguilla Wild Flowers
Wild flowers were created using prismacolor art pencils and the originals are on sale at Savannah Gallery. The images will eventually be used to create a book about the plant life of Anguilla. The Postal Service selected six flower images to create this stamp series for 2009.

Jo-Anne often returns to conventional art and has had many shows at Savannah Gallery with watercolors and oils. Currently she is working on the series "The Minds Eye", a group of oil painting depicting scenes of Anguilla that have a lasting effect on locals and visitors alike. Favorite restaurants, beaches, historical old cottages are among these images.
