SPELLING COMPETITION Stoney Ground Outpoints Other Schools |

At the end of the Cable and Wireless-sponsored 17th Annual Primary School Spelling B Competition on Tuesday night, May 17, Stoney Ground School emerged with an almost perfect record winning 39 out of a total of 40 points. The school, which came second last year, thus won the championship trophy held by Valley Primary and was awarded the first prize of US$1,000.

The Valley Primary School placed second with 36 points and received US$750. In third place was the Central [Baptist] Christian School which got 30 points and US$500.

The other scores were as follows: Teacher Gloria Omolulu Institute 28 points; Island Harbour Primary School 27; Alwyn Allison Primary School 24; Morris Vanterpool Primary School 20; and Road Primary 18 points.

The individual participants who scored the highest points were Michelle Romney of the Teacher Gloria Omolulu Institute, Mikeela Skellekie of Valley Primary, Senegal Carty and Whitney Harrigan of Stoney Ground Primary; and Naiomi Singh of the Island Harbour Primary and Brittne Levons of Central Christian School.

The moderator of the competition was Charmaine Rogers, a teacher at the Comprehensive School. The scorers were Roland Hodge, Elvet Hughes and Charles Connor; and the time-keeper was Ivor Hodge.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education, Special Assistant in the Ministry, Rhona Richardson, congratulated the young competitors for their courage and self-confidence.

She noted that such competitions played an important role in the development of students. “They not only help to improve their spelling, but foster self-confidence, friendly rivalry, team spirit and a strong identity with their school.”

Chief Executive in Anguilla, Sutcliffe Hodge, pledged that he would ensure the company’s continued sponsorship of the event, emphasing his belief in investing in the youth of the island and the region.

Mr. Hodge was grateful to the Education Department, teachers and parents for their support in organising the competition and those who served as scorers, timekeeper and moderator. He also expressed gratitude to the company’s Corporate Communications Manager, Avon Carty, and other staff members for their assistance.
