Soroptimist Concert Delights Audience |

A well-organised and delivered variety concert staged by the Soroptimist Club of Anguilla, with the support of a number of groups and individuals, brought much delight to a large and appreciative audience on April 9.

Among the cheering crowd at the Stoney Primary School Auditorium, were the Governor and his wife, Mrs. Helen Huckle, Patron of the Club, and a wide cross-section of the local and expatriate community.

Applause filled the auditorium as the performances were presented. A number of humorous presentations drew peals of laughter. Among the pieces of humour were a monologue beautifully recounting the “good old days” in Anguilla by Evalie Bradley, Labour Commissioner, and a comedy duet by Soroptimists Audrey Rogers and Alecia Ballin.

During the course of the concert, at which Teacher Art Egel did an excellent job as Master of Ceremonies, there were the following other presentations: “Bright Anguilla Morning” by the Soroptimist Singers; solos by Walter Vanterpool, a song and dance by 10-year-old Michaela Skellekie, the youngest performer; a solo by Sharon Richardson; poetry and drama by ALL AH Wee Players; a country and western song by Evan Webster; folklore performances by the Mayoumba Folkloric Theatre; classical music presentations by Dumpa Martin and Lennox Vanterpool; a medley of songs by the Soroptimist Singers; flute and clarinet solos by Shermel Richardson and Krystal Webster respectively; a solo by Catriona Lake; songs by Bankie Banx; Spriritual selections by professional singer, Una Gumbs and the concluding song “We are Proud Soroptimist” by the club’s singers.

In delivering the Vote of Thanks, President of the Soroptimist Club, Brenda Carty, thanked all those who participated in the concert thus giving of their time and talent to the work of the community organisation. She also had a word for the supportive and appreciative large number of persons at the concert. “You were a wonderful audience,” she told them.

The Soroptimist International Club of Anguilla is part of the Federation of Great Britain and Island. There are over 100,000 Soroptimist members in some 3,000 clubs in 120 countries. They provide a global voice for women through awareness, advocacy and action.

Soroptimists strive to advance the status of women, maintain high ethical standards and human rights for all and pursue equality, development, peace and international goodwill through understanding and friendship.

Soroptimist International of Anguilla was chartered in August 1981 and engages in various community projects. The club’s major project so far is the Day Care Centre in the Valley which has been successfully in operation since in 1978.
