CONDUCT OF ELECTIONS Well Done, Says Governor

In a letter to Mr. Petty the following day, February 22, Governor Huckle wrote as follows:

“I visited most polling stations during the polls as well as the count at the House of Assembly and Court building on the day. It was clear that both the polls and the count were conducted in an orderly, professional manner. This owes much to the training that you, as Elections Supervisor, gave to the election officials and to their own dedication and commitment. You can be proud of a job well done.

“Elections are vital to democracy and the orderly transition to power of a new Government. Ensuring that such elections are carried out in a peaceful, democratic manner with the least possible contention and dispute is no easy matter. All election officials had to work hard and devote long hours to the task. Again, all must be congratulated on their performance. You have played an important part in the political development of Anguilla.

“As an acknowledgement of your efforts, I should like to invite you and all election officials involved on the day to a reception at Government House on Thursday, 3 March ’05 at 6 pm, which will allow me to say thanks personally, particularly as by law I was not allowed to enter the polling stations!

“Please pass a copy of this message to all involved.

“Alan Huckle, Governor of Anguilla.”
