2004 Olympic Games
The Anguilla Philatelic Bureau is proud to have joined with other stamp issuing agencies around the world in observance of the 28th Olympiad, contested in Athens this year.
The enduring quest for athletic supremacy launched by the Greeks over three centuries ago, is a legacy which continues to inspire athletes of our island, the region and the world.
Goats of Anguilla
This purely domestic issue pays tribute to these animals who have co-existed with the islanders for centuries.
Goats have traditionally contributed to the island’s economy and were in earlier times a determining factor in the survival of the local population. The animals which are raised generally for their meat product represents approximately 65% of the local fauna population.
“Goats of Anguilla” represents a fitting tribute to these resilient creatures; all and sundry, horned and bald.
Development of the telephone
In this stamp issue the evolution of Alexander Graham Bell’s revolutionary mode of communication is traced, from the age of the Magneto or crank phone to the innovative era of the mobile cellular systems.
This long over due issue is in recognition of the amazing achievements in modern telecommunications which has literally placed the world at our fingertips.
Christmas 2004 – “A Tropical Christmas”
In recent years, designers of Anguilla’s stamps have sought to depict an indigenous concept of Christmas as an alternative to the traditional Christmas scenes.
This year the Anguilla Philatelic Bureau show case the artistic talent of Damien Carty on the issue, Christmas 2004 – “A Tropical Christmas”.
Mr. Carty’s Disney styled creations depicts Santa Claus in a satirical mood. The raggedly attired Santa seems to encounter considerable difficulty dealing with delivery in the tropics. The mythical figure is seen perched on a donkey instead of his accustomed sleigh, charting his course through unfamiliar territory.
“Jolly Ole St. Nick’s” however, finds baking traditional Christmas treats in the rock overn a delightful task and takes time for some much needed recreation as he holds his own on the marumba in a local string band.
All these stamp issues and more are available from the Anguilla Philatelic Bureau at very attractive prices. These can be purchased in sets, First Day Covers and souvenir sheets.
