Chairman of the Bank, Joseph N. Payne, said the general public was being invited to participate in a competition for a dynamic slogan to be used on all of the Bank’s material over the period of celebrations.

He said that December 1984 would always be a memorable month for the Bank because it was then that the institution was incorporated and subsequently, in March 1985, purchased the assets of Bank of America. He praised the group of visionaries who felt that the time had come for Anguillians to have a stake in the financial sector. He also commended the Board of Directors and Management who chartered the successful operations of the Bank over the years.

“There is no boastfulness in saying that our profits for the year amounted to 7.3 million dollars while our assets have grown to 501 million,” he disclosed. “The attainment of this milestone of a half billion dollars in assets is a fitting 20th Anniversary patronage award from our customers.”
He also stated that as of March 31 this year, customers’ savings held at the Bank accounted for 45.92 percent of the total deposits among the four banks on the island. In addition NBA led the way in promoting consortium lending, thus financing a number of major projects on the island.

Mr. Payne further disclosed that NBA would shortly provide customers with access to financial instruments traded on the Eastern Caribbean Stock Exchange as soon as it obtained a licence to operate as an intermediary in the market.

In reviewing NBA’s operations over the past 18 months, he spoke of the work of the Bank’s Pension Fund Management Company in assisting other businesses to develop pension schemes for their employees; and of the bank’s contributions to sports, education, culture and social development. He felt that NBA had every reason to be proud of its continuing success over the years.

Chairperson of the anniversary events, Director Maglan Lewis-Richardson, who also spoke at the ceremony, gave a rundown of the activities. She said that October 8 is the deadline for the slogan competition; and there will be the naming of the bank’s corporate building and a customer gift give-away in December this year.

January - April 2005 will be an art and essay competition; in March, a church service; talks in schools; a customer/shareholder appreciation day and a financial literacy seminar; in June, a boat race and fun day; July, a tennis tournament; July to September, student loans promotions; September to October, preparation and publication of a commemorative magazine; September to December, an inter-school quiz; November, a National Development Conference and the Jazz Festival; and in December, the unveiling of a painting of promoters and the sponsoring of the ALHCS football competition.

Committee members, working with Mrs. Lewis-Richardson, are Valentine Banks, Ian Ferguson, Timothy Hodge, Fabian Fahie, Carlene Gumbs, Karen Hodge and Marisa Gumbs (who chaired the ceremony).
