Class Six P of the Road Primary School has been named as the winner of the 2004 Hello Tourist Project of the Year Award. The awards were announced at a cocktail reception in honour of all Class six students held on Wednesday, July 14th, 2004 at the Anguilla Great House Beach Resort.

The prize was awarded to the students based on their artistry exhibited in both project submissions, namely a Flag of Anguilla from the Sea, depicting Anguilla’s flag, resplendent in blue and complete with the three intertwined dolphins, all made from sand and sea shells which had been painted to match the colours of the flag. The second project, which had to be a community /school project with relevance to tourism, took the form of a hand painted mural featuring the Hello Tourist greeting, and offering both words of welcome and farewell to visitors to the island, depending on from which direction you were approaching the school.

Second place honours were captured by Morris Vanterpool Primary School, who presented t-shirts adorned with petroglyphs and dyed with locally extracted dye from the cactus and other plants in a unique and original art form called “petroart”. Their community/school project took the form of a series of political speech presentations prepared and presented by four groups of students, for the purpose of convincing the other students to vote for a particular party based on their presentation of issues relating to tourism and the environment in Anguilla.

Other noteworthy hand craft presentations included tie-dyed T-shirts from Stoney Ground Primary, a model of a Tourism Express train by Class 6R, and of Paradise Cove Resort’s poolside by Class 6M, both of the Valley Primary School, an attractive potted plant arrangement from Road Primary 6R, and a collection of paintings and other art forms from Class 6T of the Gloria Omolulu Institute.

The Alwyn Allison School received third place honours for their presentation of wooden flower planters, which had been hand-painted with nature’s scenery and abstract art. For their community/school project, the students chose to paint eight benches, four of which were decorated with whimsical cartoon characters and placed outside the class six room for use by future students and visitors to the class, while the other four were decorated with beautiful scenes of Anguilla and placed strategically along the shore of the Long Bay pond for use by visitors interested in engaging in birdwatching, or simply soaking up the sun along the scenic pathways.

The Hello Tourist Project of the Year Award provides students with the opportunity to put into practice some of the principles of tourism learnt as part of the Hello tourist program, and is a means of showcasing the student’s entrepreneurial talents and handicraft skills. The trophies and winning plaque are sponsored by Alloyd’s Enterprises, while the reception was realized through the generous sponsorship of Social Security of Anguilla, Cable & Wireless, Anguilla Financial Services, D-3 Enterprises, Anglec, Halls Unique Bakery, Corner Bar Pizza, JTC Brokers, and the Anguilla Great House Beach Resort.
