The Hurricane Lenny Road Project which calls for the redesign and development if six stretches of road at separate locations on the island has moved to the Quarter area.
|
The first stage of the work being carried out there is the installation of a carefully-planned drainage system designed by DLN Consultants in Barbados.
The system comprises a huge culvert running beneath the northern side of the road with gullies and soak-a-ways at various points. This is expected to solve the flow of water which occurs on this road in times of heavy rainfall.
A sidewalk will eventually be constructed over the excavated area as part of the improvement to the road. After this aspect of the work is completed, the reconstruction of the road will be commenced in full by the contractors C. O. Williams of Barbados.
According to John Holland, one of the company’s engineers in Anguilla, work has been progressing well on the other roads. The Covecastles Road which has been well-built up above the edge of the pond is 90% completed; the Little Harbour Road 85%; and the East End Road 75%. Work is going ahead on a section of the Sandy Ground Road; and the road at Island Harbour is yet to be started.
The road development work is being carried out following damage done by flood waters which accompanied Hurricane Lenny in 1999. The project is being financed from a loan to the Anguilla Government by the Caribbean Development Bank.
