ST. AUGUSTINE'S CHORALE PERFORMANCE TOP QUALITY |
| Publishing date: 24.04.2003 13:15 |
The Easter Experience presented by the St Augustine’s Chorale was much appreciated by all who attended the performances. It was directed by Lennox Vanterpool and included a choir of thirty with accompanists on piano, organ, flute, drum and clarinet, all performing to a high standard.
|
The programme included a variety of presentations, some traditional and some Negro spirituals. The pieces were adapted and improvised by the talented Lennox Vanterpool who selected them from a variety of sources and were combined to tell the Easter story.
Explaining the use of Negro Spirituals at the beginning of the programme, Tameika Fleming said, “The incredible circumstances that surrounded the birth of the Negro Spiritual and the messages of hope, faith and victory which characterise this profound song form, bear a striking resemblance to the earthly ministry of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The presentation of a work which includes the passion, death and resurrection of Christ, therefore, is further enhanced and most appropriately communicated through the wide use of the Negro Spiritual.”
The soloists all performed admirably and included Chanelle Petty-Barrett, Desserree Duncan, Chrispen Gumbs, Amelia Vanterpool-Kubisch, Audrey Rogers, Lyndon Duncan and Margaret Augustus. Kimba Carty, Samara Gumbs and Sheena Webster accompanied on the clarinet, with Pierdtje Marlin, Gina Richardson and Shermel Richardson on the flute and Ivan Connor on the drum. The narrator was Franklyn Richardson.
A video was filmed and audio cassettes made at the first performance on Palm Sunday and will soon be available for purchase.
