Stunning Discovery At Building Site

There is always the possibility of making some discovery when carrying out deep excavations in the earth, as one family at Island Harbour and their construction workers found out several days ago.

The discovery was made when workmen engaged in excavation work for a ten-foot cistern, at the back of the dwelling house owned by Henley and Janine Johnson, came upon a small but stunning cave. The opening, not quite six feet in diameter, was a scene of extremely beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, all in impressive formation and growth. The small area also appeared to contain fossil-like formations, adding to the wonder and beauty of the tiny limestone cave.

With the need to get on with the construction work, and the fact that there was no other available land area on which to build the cistern, the family had no alternative but to, regretfully, close-up the cave and continue building probably a foot away from the still undisturbed site.

The family’s home, called “the cornerstone house”, by reason of its very solid concrete foundation and upper walls, built some years ago, is located near the junction of the Island Harbour main road and the Island Harbour/Shoal Bay road.
