|
On invitation from the Department of Education, Professor Stafford Griffith, Director of the Caribbean Centre for Excellence in Teacher Training (CCETT), and Mr. Delroy Alleyne, the Regional Coordinator, met with officers from the department on Thursday 7th May, 2009 to discuss the introduction of the CCETT project in the primary schools in Anguilla.

The Caribbean CETT initiative, which was piloted ( with funding from USAID) in a number of regional countries including Jamaica and St Lucia about two years ago, is described as a comprehensive set of strategies based on scientifically-based reading research and the latest understanding of reading development.
According to the two officials, the research and feedback on CCETT have shown that there has been significant improvement in the reading abilities and literacy skills of the children in the countries where the project was implemented. In light of this success, the decision has been made to explore the possibility of rolling out the project to five other countries including Anguilla and Montserrat.

A number of meetings are planned to move forward with the implementation of the initiative. An agreement in principle was reached, with the two officials, to conduct a workshop in reading for teachers of grades K to 3 here in Anguilla during the week of 17th August, 2009. The officials were impressed with the structure that Anguilla already has in place for literacy development and for improving reading within the schools.
The Ministry and Education Department are convinced that our children can benefit tremendously from the CCETT project and are eagerly looking forward for its implementation.
