Anguilla Driving Tips

There are lots of ways to get around in Anguilla but if you want to drive a car here are some things you should know.
A few simple tips for a safe trip.
Always drive on the left side of the road.

30 MPH on most roads, 20 MPH in villages and school crossings.

If you become confused, pull off the road and ask directions, locals know the island and probably can tell you exactly how to get where you want to go.

Watch out for KIDS...both kinds!

Anguilla is a haven for goats and most of them are wandering around free. Occasionally a goat or sheep will wander into the road without looking. Children often do the same thing, maybe they are watching the goats!
Driving at night...be especially careful to look for folks walking along the road. Most of Anguilla is rural and there are no sidewalks so people will often walk on the edge of the road in the dark and often on your (the drivers) side.

Take turns driving or sightseeing, you can't do both safely.

Speed hump or bump means slow down. There is a hump in the road to control traffic speed. Also known as a sleeping policeman.

Speed Humps or Dips

Ouch, these little humps in the road will catch you if you don't pay attention. When approaching villages pay careful attention, most have warning signs but some don't and road paint in Anguilla doesn't last forever. There is a nasty dip in the road near North Hill, it can cause considerable damage if you are going fast enough.

Now for the traffic situation that puts fear in the hearts of every driver...the roundabout or traffic circle. Anguilla now has four traffic circles and they actually help keep traffic moving smoothly even during rush hour. (Not that Anguilla has much of a rush hour but it can get rather congested at around 3 pm in the Valley when school lets out.)
