Cap Juluca Launches 21st Season With Comprehensive Staff Training

As Cap Juluca prepares to launch its twenty-first season, training and development of its near 400 staff continues to top the list of priorities of the internationally acclaimed resort. “There is no question that Cap Juluca’s success over the past twenty-one years is largely due to the warm and friendly service provided by the Julucan team,” says Director of Human Resources, Phyllis Fleming-Banks. As testament to this commitment the new ownership of Cap Juluca continues to build on the resort’s legacy as a leader in staff training.

When Hurricane Omar delayed the November 1st reopening, not only did Adam Aron add another US$9 million to the renovation of the property, but he also decided to dedicate the six weeks leading up to the new reopening date to staff training. “This provided us with a unique opportunity for comprehensive training,” says General Manager, Gary Thulander, “and it also ensured that our team members continued to receive their regular wages, capped with the owner’s generous donation of the equivalent of last season’s service charge.”

In addition to the regular skills training, sessions have focused on enhancing the staff’s knowledge of the tourism industry as a whole. Tourism Specialist and Head of the Government’s Tourism Sector Development Project, Ms. Jasmin Garraway, facilitated several tourism awareness/sensitisation sessions. The dynamic sessions focused on the ‘Role of Tourism in Anguilla’s Development’, ‘The Impacts of Tourism Development’, ‘Tourism Marketing’, ‘The Role of the Hospitality Sector’ and ‘Attitudes and Motivation’.

Key personnel from all the departments were certified in Basic First Aid Competence by the Anguilla Red Cross. Led by Recreation/Environment Coordinator, Lloyd Gumbs, staff were also taken on several educational and site-seeing tours to various historical and archaeological sites, including the Heritage Collection Museum, the Big Spring, the Cavannagh Cave and the Katouche Trails.

With no regular guests in-house, role-playing allowed staff to experience service from the guest perspective and, with less than a week to reopening, some 15 trainers are assisting with the computer/systems, spa services and other training. Master Chef René Bajeux, the resort’s new Executive Chef, has also begun training his culinary team on the menus for the three restaurants, Pimms, Spice (the new Pan Asian restaurant) and Blue (formerly George’s).

“The Julucan team has been energised by all the training initiatives and the renovation process as a whole”, says Thulander. “Training is critical to maintaining our position as a leader in the industry and in providing consistent five-star/five-diamond service to our internal and external guests. Accordingly, we have sought to support the training efforts of Dr. Fleming-Banks and the rest of the team with the addition of our new Training Officer, Indah Wallace.” This will ensure that Cap Juluca continues to empower its staff with training and professional growth opportunities.
