The presentations were made by Marissa Gumbs, NBA’s Business Development and Research Officer. Those who received the awards were Andre Hall on behalf of the captains and crews of the winning boats and three representatives of the teams which placed first, second and third in the village games.
Miss Gumbs said seven teams participated from various villages on the island and it was a very successful event. “We had lots of people coming out to support the teams and I think I can say that our objective in having this event was achieved tremendously once again,” she stated at the presentation ceremony at NBA’s Board Room. “Initially when we decided to have this event it was part of our 20th Anniversary celebrations and we thought we should do something to bring the villages back together as in the past in view of all the rivalry that is going on now and to create some kind of harmony among the young people and the villages. We can say that so far this was successfully achieved because we had persons there from Blowing Point, the Valley, Island Harbour and they were all together, getting along and running side by side and fortunately we did not have any mishaps.
“In terms of the boat race this year, we had thirteen boats participating and as usual it was quite a spectacle to behold. Coming in first position we had Real Deal followed by the Sonic in second place, Super Star in third position and De Tree, which was NBA’s first winner, fourth and in fifth place was UFO.” She noted that preparing for a boat race was a very hard and expensive task and she thanked the captains and crews for their participation.

Speaking on behalf of the Boat Racing Committee, Mr. Hall, the Treasurer, was grateful to NBA for being the sole sponsor of the Peter Perkins Memorial Boat Race over the past four years and for having the sporting events on the beach to engage the interest of the people while the boats were out of sight.
Fabrice Stevens, of the NBA Social Club, thanked all the participants in the various events and promised that next year’s activities would be even more interesting. Angela Vanterpool, captain of the combined Stoney Ground and Little Dix team, also spoke. She noted that her team had won first position in the village games on three consecutive occasions and looked forward to NBA’s continued sponsorship of the sporting activities. The Blowing Point team took second place and in third position was the team from the Farrington and its environs.
