12 Planes Land In Anguilla From Puerto Rico Aero Club

Five twin engine and seven single engine planes were to be seen at Wallblake Airport over the past weekend. They were all aircraft belonging to members of the Aero Club of Puerto Rico who were in Anguilla for a weekend. The trip was organized by the Anguilla Tourist Board (ATB) through its representative in Puerto Rico, Raquel Echandi Rexach, and Director of Tourism in Anguilla, Amelia Vanterpool-Kubisch.

There were 36 members of the Club who stayed at the Anguilla Great House and enjoyed visiting the beaches, a boat tour, and dinners co-sponsored by the ATB held at the Great House and at Kuyah Restaurant at Ku Hotel.

President of the Aero Club, Manuel Borrero, said that the Club has 165 members and between them own 110 planes. Membership is open to all who are enthusiastic about aviation and members fly for similar weekend visits on a regular basis about every six weeks. Recently, they visited St Kitts, the Dominican Republic, St Croix, Antigua, Tortola and St Maarten.

The aim of the Club is “To promote aviation as a recreation and a sport and, while doing so, to help to better the quality of life and to get involved in humanitarian activities like disaster relief.” Borrero said that the members have been involved in taking under-privileged and handicapped children for flights, were also part of a search and rescue mission for a missing pilot and, following a hurricane in the Dominican Republic, seven of their planes flew with food and materials as part of a relief effort.
Amelia Vanterpool-Kubisch explained that Anguilla has been targeting the Puerto Rico market for some time and she hopes the visit will create greater awareness and increase the level of visitors to Anguilla from that island.
