The week began on Sunday, June 29, with the management and staff of the growing law firm attending the divine service at St. Augustine’s Anglican Church at East End, conducted by Assistant Priest, Reverend Menes Hodge. Towards the end of the service, the Minister offered his congratulations to the company, stressed its importance in Anguilla and wished it continued success in the years ahead.

Responding, Mr. Lake, a prominent member of St. Mary’s, The Valley, thanked the East End congregation for their welcome and hospitality. He extended his gratitude and appreciation to all persons in Anguilla who “embraced us over the last 15 years and made it possible for us to be here today.”

The commemorative activities were planned to coincide with July 5, when Mr. Lake established his law firm in Anguilla in 1993. At that time the only workers were himself and his sister, Jean. The company now has a management and staff numbering almost 30 persons.

Mr. Lake, son of the late Reverend Raphael Lake, MBE, began his formal education in 1969 at St. Louis University, Missouri, where he trained as an Aircraft Engineer. He worked for a number of years with the St. Maarten-based commuter airline, WINAIR. He later returned to that university and completed a Bachelor’s Degree. He then went on to the University of Kansas City, also in Missouri, to pursue his legal studies. He graduated in 1979 with a Juris Doctorate Degree with distinction and took up employment with the United States Government.

In 1984 he began working with the Allied Signal Corporation (now Honeywell Corporation) in Kansas City, as a Senior Attorney and became General Counsel in 1990. In 1992 he went to the University of the West Indies Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica and completed a six-month course and obtained a Certificate of Legal Education which enabled him to practice in the Eastern Caribbean, and in Anguilla in particular, since in 1993.

“I never really planned it this way because I saw coming home as a semi-retirement as my father got on in age; so everything that has happened has been a surprise to me also because it certainly wasn’t planned to be that way,” he told The Anguillian. “We thank the entire Anguillian community – the business sector and the citizens at large – for supporting us during these 15 years and we hope that we will endeavour to give back even more than we have received.”

The week of activities included motivational seminars for staff members by Mr. Louise Price (who is also a local fitness expert) and Resident High Court Judge, Madam Justice Janice George-Creque on Wednesday. On Saturday Keithley Lake & Associates will visit the Tender Loving Care Home in The Valley, where they will present gifts and entertain the residents.

Mr. Lake is married to Anguillian Dr. Rona Hodge, who also resided and worked in the United States for some years. She is now a General Surgeon at Hughes Medical Services.
