Religious Perspectives: Splendid Women Performance At Ebenezer

Applause erupted throughout the crowded Ebenezer Methodist Church on Sunday, June 29, as the congregation and visitors were treated with some splendid performances by a pageant of womenfolk as they presented varied portrayals of some of the popular women of the Bible.

The performing women, attired in colourful swaddling robes, were led through their presentations by narrator Veronica Gumbs, wife of the Reverend John A. Gumbs. The performers dramatised the varied life experiences of the Old and New Testament women in word, song and dance.

“There are more than 400 women recorded in the Bible and, not really wanting to bore you by portraying every woman who appeared there, we have selected a few of them who we trust will bless you as you join with us in celebrating their lives,” the well-spoken Mrs. Gumbs told her listeners. “You may sing along and enjoy yourselves thoroughly and we hope that you will receive a great blessing.”

The programme, sponsored by the Ebenezer United Sisters, also featured a number of young children, in recognition of the many children who featured in the Bible.

The Women of the Bible programme was attended by Methodists from the six congregations on the island. Among them were Superintendent of the Anguilla Circuit, the Reverend Dr. and Mrs. H. Clifton Niles and Reverends Careen White and Joseph Lloyd.

Dame Bernice Lake, QC, one of Anguilla’s influential women, was also in attendance.
