The RFA Wave Ruler visits Anguilla once a year as part of its patrol through the Caribbean waters. Their main mission is to give support to all of the overseas territories in the event of a major disaster as well as assist in counter drug and re-fuelling of other vessels. Captain Duncan took over the helm in February for Captain Jarvis who recently retired and had a memorable visit to Anguilla last year. Before arriving to Anguilla, the Wave Ruler visited Grenada and Curacao.

Besides preparing for relief, they are heavily engaged in maritime security, counter narcotics, counter human trafficking as well as conducting training sessions for disaster relief contingents on the various islands. The Wave Ruler has had a great deal of success over the years in the counter drug area as they had been equipped with a Royal Marine Sniper unit and a helicopter. Captain Lamb mentioned that this year however they do not have the Royal Marine Officers present. The Wave Ruler also primarily serves as a fuel tanker. The ship itself is a 31,000 ton tanker of which 13,000 tons is fuel. Aviation and diesel fuels comprise the tanker and they give relief not only to British ships but American, French and Dutch as well. The crew of the Wave Ruler are fully trained and ready to assist Anguilla in the event of hurricane or other disaster. Look for a more detailed account of the Wave Ruler from Mrs. Penny Legg in this edition of The Anguillian. Jason Allen
