Table Tennis Excites School Children |
There is much excitement in table tennis among school children and adults in Anguilla. This followed the recent competition held for children as well as adults by the Sports Department, an arm of the Ministry of Social Development.
The event, on May 31, was part of the 41st Anguilla Day celebrations. Table Tennis sessions are now continuing at the Road Primary School on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3.30 to 7.30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 2.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. The next championship is planned for Saturday, June 28.
Meanwhile, the results of the first championship showed that there were 15 competing girls from the primary schools with Kimesha Proctor and Deja Webster both of the Stoney Ground School going through to the semi-finals. In a best of five Deja defeated Kimesha 3-1.
The primary school boys had 16 competitors. Sherol Richardson went down to Hackeem Alves in the best of 5 semi-finals 3-1.
The Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School had three competitors. Shaphan Smith defeated Deiron Mitchell 3-1 and Javier Richardson defeated Smith 3-1.
There were 6 competitors in the adult competition. The winners were Shem Wills first; Dexter Welcome 2nd; Patrick Thompson 4th; and Javier Richardson 5th.
The Director of the Competition was Coach Verna Edwards and the technical officer was her husband, Aubrey Edwards. Both of them are from Trinidad.
The last Table Tennis championship was held in Anguilla about 30 years ago and was won by Ralph Hodge.
