Growing Lovely Pumpkins In Anguilla

Pumpkins are among a number of vegetables that can easily be grown in Anguilla in large quantities with good added value at the supermarkets, hotels and restaurants on the island.

Pumpkin soup, fritters, pudding, dumpling, cake or simple chunks of the vegetable are usually side dishes and part of menus everywhere. The consumption rate is therefore very high in Anguilla to the extent that the thousands of pounds of pumpkin in all sizes, shapes, colours, variety and quality are imported from a number of the neighbouring islands.

In the accompanying photograph, Anderson Fleming and Edgar Richardson of West End, two farmers there, are showcasing some very large and fine pumpkins. But they were not grown at the western end of Anguilla but at Stoney Ground, where both men were visiting another farming enthusiast!
