The Health Authority of Anguilla recently held a closing ceremony for a seven day course in which the island’s resident emergency medical technicians received further training in the art of saving lives. At 7pm on Friday May 9, medical personnel gathered in the Teacher’s Resource Centre to join in congratulating those who completed the Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Course. The teachers and organizers of the course were absolutely blown away by the outstanding performance of the students.
Darlene Baptiste, CEO of the HAA, mentioned that this was a step in the right direction for the HAA and the people of Anguilla. Pre-hospital care is extremely important and saves lives. Mr. Lynrod Brooks, Health Planner for the MSD said, “EMTs are vital as people depend on the quick response and skills. Basic life support is critical and this is an area that is challenging for us here in Anguilla. There is a continuous need for training of healthcare professionals on island.”
Mrs. Doreen Gumbs Vines was the main instructor of the course and was quite passionate about her experience in Anguilla. She mentioned that what made this course fantastic was the use of modern technology and the internet. She was quite surprised by the fact that the entire course had to be changed instantly when she found out the initial exams were far too easy for the EMTs. All students took two 150 question exams and everyone did exceptionally well. Mrs. Vines was excited about the fact that Anguilla now has a certification process and each EMT will have a card that states they are qualified for the job.
Certificates and cards were distributed to the students at the end of the ceremony. A vote of thanks was given by Mr. Steve McDowall, Senior Emergency Medical Technician, and closing remarks were given by the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Kennedy Simmonds.
