Community Foundation Announces New Scholarship
|
A charitable scholarship fund in honour of long-time resident David Berglund has been established with the Anguilla Community Foundation (ACF). The fund was created by a gift of US$75,000 from Judy and Paul Carmichael and will be a scholarship granted yearly to an Anguillian resident wishing to pursue studies in veterinary science.

David Berglund has lived in Anguilla for forty years and was the first veterinarian on the island who for many years cared for the island’s pets and animals with much love and care. He has been active in the community for many years including having an airplane dealership, being a pilot for Winair, introducing hydroponics to the island, establishing the movie theatre in the Farrington, and actively supporting the revolution. He authored a book on the shipwrecks of Anguilla and is a past president and member of the Anguilla Rotary Club. He resides at Seafeathers Bay with his wife, Charlotte.
“We are extremely pleased to be able to create this scholarship fund,” Paul Carmichael commented. “David is Judy’s brother and is truly a renaissance person who has contributed much to the island. We also hope that it will encourage others to contribute scholarship funds to the ACF.”
Berglund said that he is surprised and extremely pleased with the honour particularly since it will provide yearly grants that should help provide compassionate care and treatment for Anguilla’s animals.
The ACF is Anguilla’s charitable foundation and currently has three other endowed funds created to help Anguillian students. These include the Mouton Fund, the Anguilla College Scholarship Fund, which was also established by the Carmichaels, and the Pauline Farmer Fund. Director of the ACF, Carrolle Devonish, said of the new scholarship, “We welcome this most generous contribution and particularly one that will encourage students to study veterinary medicine. It is a real boost to our efforts to support Anguillian students through scholarship assistance.”
