Social Security, now observing its 30th Anniversary, on Monday February 7, handed over a quantity of marine safety equipment to the Anguilla Government valued at just under EC$100,000. The aim is to protect the many persons who engage in fishing as a livelihood and, as part of the food chain, supply the island’s population, hotels and restaurants with a wide range of fish.

Tourism officials in Anguilla met with local agents of cruise ships on Wednesday, February 8, to discuss the promotion of the island as a destination for high-end cruise lines and some of the planned activities for the visitors.

A common expression often heard among our island folk and recorded in our cultural history, especially with reference to Anguillian seafarers, is that the “sea is in our blood”. Our people, young and old, like all others elsewhere, enjoy splashing, frolicking, swimming and diving in the sea, boating up and down on it and eating sumptuously in homes, restaurants, hotels and villas of the abounding, varied and appetising marine life it offers. Yet how infinitely treacherous and disastrous the sea can become in seconds, resulting in the drowning death of loved ones, and tortuous moments of unparalleled grief for families and friends!

I read in The Anguillian some three weeks ago that the Anguilla Government had received the opinion from Mr. Anthony Astaphan with respect to the deferring of repayment of salary reductions to civil servants.

I received a number of calls about the response by Mr. Sutcliffe Hodge in The Anguillian, for February 3rd, 2012, to my article in the previous week’s issue. My article was entitled: “I am Chief Minister, if you don’t like it get out’a here!” Mr. Hodge’s response was “Setting the Record Straight”.

With regard to the article Sutcliffe Hodge submitted to your newspaper for publication, after reading the array of personal attacks he levelled against Marcel Fahie, I could not ignore the hypocrisy he showed by stating at the end of his article that Anguillians should not use their time “to rip each other apart.”

I am truly amazed at the puerile and irresponsible behaviour that is often displayed by our so called radio personalities. They seem to know everything and are yet so ignorant of the issues they are discussing. What a pity that the suspension of the school buses to the eastern part of the island had to be turned into a party political issue!

The month of February is usually used in many countries to focus on the heart and disorders of the heart. Many residents of Anguilla continue to die from disorders of the heart. Unfortunately, heart disease is often silent, hidden and misunderstood. Education goes a long way in preventing many disorders of the heart. Healthy eating and regular exercise are important in preventing many heart ailments.

On Friday, February 3, and Monday, February 6, the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport in Anguilla, temporarily enjoyed the status of a category six aerodrome. The upgraded status was to enable the aerodrome to accommodate a Boeing 737charter aircraft which flew in and out of the island on a flight from and to North Carolina.

I want to take this opportunity to register my full support for the Government of Anguilla during this period of discussions on Cap Juluca. Although things seem to be extremely quiet, there are loud whispers abroad regarding the challenges facing the property. Cap Juluca has been for a long time not only the “flagship” but the “breadbasket” of our tourist industry as well. And let me make it clear that this statement is not intended to undermine the significant contribution of other properties, but merely to highlight the value of Cap Juluca to our economy both in terms of employment, business opportunities and government revenues.The survival of Cap Juluca, as a vibrant and successful operation, is critical to the livelihood of several hundred Anguillian families and the many businesses they patronize in the wider community.

In part 1, I made the point that the root problem between the Governor and the Chief Minister is not personal, but rather a problem of the relationship between Britain and Anguilla, and the different agendas of the parties in that relationship. The problem is therefore much bigger than these two gentlemen, and bigger than the Governor’s Office and the Government. It involves at least the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Britain and the people of Anguilla. To be blunt, it is foolish and unwise for any Anguillians to think that the problem does not or will not affect them. Because it involves everyone of us, any resolution of the problem for going forward which is not a creative one, and which advances the national agenda, will negatively impact everyone of us. This is why the call for unity, wise decision-making, and prudent behaviour is so important and urgent.

This week, February 6-10, marked another milestone in the Drugs Abuse Resistance Education Programme (D.A.R.E.) in Anguilla, according to a release from trainer Constable Shawn Lake of the Royal Anguilla Force Community Policing Department.
The above period was the end of the grades 2 and 4 lecture series as well as the graduation of the students at the Teacher Gloria Omolulu Institute. The training, which began on January 10, was delivered to 15 enthusiastic students.

This week we continue our journey into Anguilla’s maritime heritage, looking at marine heritage and archaeology. It is a subject close to my heart and my reason for finding Anguilla five years ago. I was visiting Anguilla on a research trip to St Kitts and Nevis in 2007. Sitting in the shade at Johnno’s, the seeds for an underwater project were sown. They would come to pass two years later, when I returned to Anguilla to lead the 2009 Anguilla Shipwreck Survey with a team of international divers and archaeologists.

On December 23rd 2011, the Optimist Club of Anguilla was contacted by a visitor to the island (guest at one of our leading hotels). The visitor, who has frequented Anguilla and wishes to remain anonymous, wanted to make donations of food and toiletries to needy families on the island, all in the spirit of Christmas. What may have seemed like a daunting task, for most, was a welcomed challenge by the Optimist Club of Anguilla and notably Food Drive Coordinator Optimist Emma Ferguson who went to work immediately. Showing her true optimistic spirit, she contacted the Department of Social Development to garner names of individuals and families in need.

A husband and wife couple, James and Sonia Morton, of Rock Farm, Anguilla, appeared on national radio to tell of a brutal attack they experienced and what, for Mr. Morton in particular, was a miraculous recovery.

Fellow Anguillians, as Minister with responsibility for electricity I am pleased to announce that the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) – a UK based development funding agency - has agreed to fund a consultancy to recommend amendments to Anguilla’s electricity legislation to allow for integration of Renewable Energy technologies into Anguilla’s electricity profile.
