A campus ribbon-cutting ceremony and a gala cocktail reception and dinner at Viceroy Hotel were the combined grand events which marked the official opening of the Saint James School of Medicine in Anguilla last weekend, August 12 and 13. The occasions came a year-and-a-half into the operations of the institution which placed the introduction of its teaching programmes, enrollment, accreditation, and even its first graduation of students, well ahead of its formal opening.

Apart from the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which is threatening Anguilla, (not to mention the other Caribbean islands) two other types of storms appear to be hovering menacingly over Anguilla. The hope is, however, that they will eventually and harmlessly dissipate like some of the recent tropical depressions.

Dear Mr. Smith,
You strike a most appreciative chord with me when you essentially highlight the virtues of "small" over "big". You have most eloquently described the benefits to Anguilla of the some 750 private home owners, of which I am one, over the disadvantages of some of the larger projects pursued by an earlier government. However, the larger projects were permitted and encouraged during a period of global economic boom. Had they not been mismanaged, nor experienced the economic downturn, and turned out be successful as contemplated, your criticisms of them may have become invalid, and the earlier government's decisions to support them, vindicated.

As the second class of the Saint James Medical School prepares to complete the Basic Science program, students take a moment to reflect back on their experiences so that others may fully understand the opportunity the Saint James School of Medicine Anguilla offers to those with a dream of becoming a physician. (The Basic Science program is the 16-month program medical students undergo here in Anguilla, before they proceed to the US for an additional two and a half years of clinical education to receive their medical degree).

Is there turmoil of one sort or another in our lives? Is there turmoil in our country or in the world around us? Do things seem to be getting worse before they get any better? As we ponder these burdensome issues, a question inevitably comes to mind – who really is in control?

There is growing evidence that the number of children in Anguilla affected by asthma is on the increase. Asthma in children is a leading cause of emergency room visits, hospitalizations and missed school days. Childhood asthma must be taken seriously by parents and health care professionals as untreated asthma can be life-threatening in some instances. An acute asthmatic attack can be a medical emergency requiring urgent attention.

Let me begin my column this week with a direct excerpt from a public apology delivered over radio and submitted in a signed statement by the Chief Minister, Hubert B. Hughes in 1999. I am moved to include this excerpt because I continue to be concerned about the large volume of lies, half-truths and innuendos, which the Chief Minister propagates regularly in an effort to shore up the rapidly deteriorating image of his Government. I will quote that statement here in part as follows:

A number of churches from across the island have united for the purpose of sharing the gospel in order to see individuals come to experience the blessings and benefits of God’s full and free salvation.
