Witnessing the coming together of the people of Anguilla during the recent search and rescue of Sam ‘Miracle’ Webster was a most heartfelt and inspiring happening for my wife and me.

Letter To The Editor

The phrase ‘bland architecture’ is wonderful! For many years some of us have been discussing the lack of planning or foresight in the Valley area and could not think of a delicate way to say it but ‘bland architecture’ exactly fits the so-called architecture of the area. (There are, of course, one or two exceptions). Box like structures are popping up without a thought to design or aesthetics.

Dear Sir,

MORE LOST ANGUILLA BEACHES

Almost 2 years ago, 10 representatives of government – including 3 ministers – toured the West End beaches with the West End Concerned Group, and committed to improve beach access and correct several building abuses. Let’s take a look at what progress – or lack of progress – has been made.

Tony Lee Writes To Anguilla
Lee in earlier years

The following letter was written by Anthony (Tony) Lee who served as Senior British Official and Commissioner in the early years of the Anguilla Revolution. Mr. Lee, 84, lives in Suffolk, England, from where he keeps in close contact with the island and is a long-time subscriber to The Anguillian.

Dear Sir:

My wife Connie and I first came to Anguilla in 1985 and have returned every year since. Over that time, we’ve become increasingly dismayed by the transformation of the island we came to love all those years ago, but we’ve always thought it proper to keep our opinions to ourselves.

The Editor,

Dear Sir,

Recently there has been much interest in the newly installed fuel tanks at the airport in Anguilla. The words ‘state of the art’ (whatever that means) were used to describe the project. Congratulations to all those concerned, but the project could require reassessment. Should these tanks be above ground, or buried underground for safety reasons? No gas station anywhere has tanks above ground. After making some enquiries, there was general agreement that indeed there was cause for concern.

Dear Editor,

I must ask: Has the system contributed to our children’s lack of motivation to strive for academic excellence? I attended the recent graduation ceremony of the Class of 2007 of the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School. As I sat waiting for the ceremony to begin, I perused the awards on the back of the programme.

Dear Sir:

ANGLEC’S BILLING SYSTEM

I am writing this letter to the attention of the General Manager of Anglec. I am very unhappy with your billing system. You send customers a bill each month with a date in bold print saying: “Please pay Current Charges before 9/20/2007 to avoid disconnection.”

Dear Sir,

FIRE FIGHTING

I found the recent article ‘News that did not make the News’ by Colville Petty useful. It is good to be brought up to date on news that you have missed. When you think about it a lot of things are happening and we tend to focus on what is bad. But read the news paper and there is good news. The Anguillian of 21 September reported on the scholarship awarded to Clive Smith, the coming national youth conference and Stoney Ground School celebrating a 30th anniversary among other stories.

Letter To The Editor - Unity

Dear Sir,

Unity

In the bible we read that Jesus prayed for all those who would come to believe in him. As recorded in the gospel of John chapter 17 verses 20 to 26, according to the New Life Version, he asks the following of God: “.... I pray for those who will put their trust in Me through the teaching they have heard. May they all be as one, Father, as You are in Me and I am in You. May they belong to Us. Then the world will believe that You sent Me. I gave them the honor You gave Me that they may be one as We are One. I am in them and You are in Me so they may be one and be made perfect. Then the world may know that You sent Me and that You love them as You love Me.

Dear Sir:

I would like to propose a couple of suggestions which may help to reduce crime on our island.

A few years ago there was a break-in at one of our local offices. The staff was asked to wait outside until police investigators checked the crime scene, including ‘dusting for fingerprints.’

Salvation

Salvation

Two weeks ago I wrote about repentance. But the central issue is salvation. Repentance is important for the future of Anguilla but what is important to the future of us all is salvation. If I were to tell you that of the two chairs in front of you one would support your weight and one would collapse under you, you may well argue with me.You may contend that both would support you or that both may collapse or even that I had it wrong about which one would collapse.

I applaud the letter from Violet Berry in The Anguillian last week. The points are all well made and I do hope that our government has taken note and proposes to take action and soon.We all have the right to enjoy our beaches but are progressively being prevented from doing so. What will our children have left?

Dear Sir:

It is amazing how expert negotiators are able to cloud issues in their own favour and when folks are off on an unimportant tangent somewhere in left field they are able to zero in and win what they aimed for in the first instance. It is too late now for persons to discuss the pros and cons of having dolphin pens in Anguilla. They are here and most of us have no objections to that. The real issue facing Anguillians is where to locate this new facility.

On 16 August the ‘day’ got off to a bad start with worries over the logo used on the tee shirts for the parade. The logo is in fact that of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament that was started in London in 1958. People may be interested in the attached CND pictures.

Sir,

Letters in The Anguillian

I read the letter from Sheridan Smith in The Anguillian of 3 August with interest. It seems that Sheridan is well able to look after himself so I will not enter into that debate. One or two points spring to mind however. If we had proper legislation on the books Sheridan would have a legal forum in which to express his concerns and the Chief Minister would not be drawn into ad-hoc decisions. Surely it is becoming clear to our Government that they are damaging themselves by the way the government is run. On the radio we were promised by the Chief Minister that any decision in the Cap Juluca matter would be taken in the interests of Anguillian labour.

Sir, I congratulate the Government of Anguilla (GoA) that they are inviting Anguillians to apply for scholarships to pursue various degree courses. It is good that on the radio it was announced that only people already accepted by a university for a particular course would be considered. This goes a long way to ensuring that only people of serious intent will be considered.
