Dear Mr Editor,

Appointment of Second Nominated Member

Please allow me a little space in you paper to comment on the appointment of Mr Leroy Rogers as Second Nominated Member in the House of Assembly.
For the past 8 months, the House of Assembly has been without the Second Nominated Member and there was cause for concern coming from many quarters, particularly because the said member is also the Deputy Speaker of the House. Now that the impasse is over, we can breathe a sigh of relief and add a little humour to it.

Dear Honorable Ministers of Government,

I would like to request that the Government of Anguilla allow all musical CDs and DVDs of local Anguillian artists imported to Anguilla be free of duties. I believe that any products of Anguilla that help promote Anguilla’s talent and its culture should be viewed as an Anguillian promotional product.

The following letter was sent to Anguilla’s Chief Minister, Mr. Hubert Hughes, by Helen Nellthorp, Acting Director, Overseas Territories Directorate of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and was the basis for Mr. Hughes' recent radio broadcast and the front page article in this edition of The Anguillian:

IS ANGUILLA BEDEVILLED?

I am a very worried person and national of Anguilla. The problem that is wearing me down is the fact that things are not settling down in Anguilla, and when one issue appears to have died down another, and perhaps worse, scenario presents itself. It is as though our island is bedevilled.

HISTORY WILL NOT REPEAT ITSELF

I have read with bewilderment the letters, in The Anguillian, over the past weeks in particular those by the “foreigner”. I have had enough and now wish to state the following: When you crept in amongst us, you, like Columbus, came out of a vested interest to search out other places fit for human habitation. You came and became cognizant that your many vanities did not equate with a true quality of life.

Dear Sir:

I read Vol. 12, No. 41 of The Anguillian dated Friday, October 22, 2010 with much interest and concern particularly your front page article, “Over 100 New Workers at Viceroy”, the second paragraph of which said that the new employees were the “cream of the crop”. I am not sure of the basis upon which such a conclusion was drawn but I do believe the expression is worthy of comment.

THOSE PIT BULLS!

For the past month I have noticed an increase in the number of young men walking the street with un-muzzled pit bulls. Many of these dogs seem to be walking their owners instead of the other way around.

Blinding Light

Recently I was blinded by the light!

I wasn't on the road to Damascus, and wasn't riding a donkey!

Nevertheless I was blinded on the road near the Department of Public Works, where there are no street lamps and the traffic traveling north has to use its high beam. Unfortunate for me for being blinded. Instead of hitting the high beam square on I hit the tree in front of Public Works. Thank God I wasn't riding a donkey, and thank God I was wearing my seatbelt. My car was not too happy, since now it's missing a few parts and I can't drive it.

Shooting the Messenger

It is not an uncommon sentiment to "shoot the messenger" when you either don't like the message or cannot quite respond to the same more specifically. Let me please tell you a little about the "foreigner" whose reaction you find "strange, if not mischievous", even though you may not subscribe to the wisdom of occasionally seeing yourself through the eyes of an "outsider" - something that can be quite beneficial.

Dear Mr. Editor:

AG MORE THAN JUST A MEMBER

Dear Mr. Bahlla:

We read your letter in last week’s issue of The Anguillian in which you severely criticised Mr. Victor Banks for his article entitled “So Shall It Be” which you said was a tirade against the Chief Minister and his son.

The following letter was sent to the Minister of Social Development, Mr. Edison Baird, by the Chief Minister, Mr. Hubert Hughes. It was released to The Anguillian for publication.

I pen this opinion not only as a concerned Anguillian who has over the past months become petrified by the low level of decorum in the House of Assembly, but more so as a former Speaker of the Anguilla House of Assembly who has become dismayed with the current administration of the House and the un-democratic nature in which it is functioning.

A few months ago I wrote an article where I congratulated the Right Honourable Mr Baird for setting up a working party to look into a number of issues which included the quality of health care on Anguilla.

I had decided not to comment on this matter but, however I try to dismiss it, it comes back to my mind and so I am writing to get it out of my thoughts.

The following letter, dated September 14, 2010, was written by Chief Minister, Mr. Hubert Hughes, to the Minister of Social Development, Mr. Edison Baird. It was received by Mr. Baird from the Speaker of the Anguilla House of Assembly, Mrs. Barbara Webster-Bourne, on September 21.
