CITRUS Group, at East End, is partnering with the Environmental Health Unit in a clean-up programme in the district. A town hall meeting in that regard was held on May 22on the grounds of the Old East End School.

Students from all six Government Primary Schools in Anguilla benefited from a workshop on Friday, May 20, which covered various issues of life: religious, education, social and health.

The Third Annual Caribbean Cable Communications Inter-primary Anguilla Day Quiz took place at the Orealia Kelly Primary School Auditorium on Thursday, May 19.

Shellya Rogers, the reigning Miss Anguilla 2010-2011, added another win to her list of accomplishments when she placed First Runner-up in the Miss Caribbean World Pageant in the British Virgin Islands on Saturday, May 21. She captured the title of Miss Intellect, scoring 90 points.

This year Camp Be Aware is gearing up for the 13th edition of its annual two-week summer environmental programme to be held from July 11-22nd 2011. A total of 48 grade 4 and 5 students, six from each of the island’s primary schools, will be invited to take part in Anguilla’s most popular summer camp.

At the Pageant on Saturday evening six teenagers competed for the title of Miss Caribbean Talented Teen. Sixteen year old Sylvana Charles from the British Virgin Islands was the clear winner, also winning the Miss Congeniality prize and Best Promotional Speech. She is graduating from high school this year and wants to pursue a masters degree in performing arts. She said that she loves singing, dancing, theatre and reading.

Improving access to Anguilla through St. Maarten, with Juliana International Airport as the hub, with a section to facilitate Anguilla-bound travellers and other immigration issues, was among some of the matters discussed here between Government and tourism officials from both territories.

General Manager and Managing Director of Malliouhana Hotel and Spa, Nigel Roydon, announced in a press release on Monday, May 16, that the property would be closing for the summer for refurbishments and renovations on Sunday, May 22. Reopening of the resort is scheduled for the thanksgiving period in November.

The Anguilla Government’s Literacy Project, being undertaken through the Ministry of Education, got a further boost on Monday this week when the National Bank of Anguilla contributed EC$15,000 towards local training initiatives.

Twelve criminal activities were reported in Anguilla during the period May 11-18. Three of the cases were burglaries at Corito, Old Ta and Island Harbour. The stolen property included a gas cylinder and goats.

Family, friends and well-wishers crowded St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Island Harbour, on Sunday, May 15, to celebrate the 90th birthday of Mrs. Bernice V. Lake, a well-known resident at White Hill.

LIME Anguilla joined its colleague branches in the region in observing World Telecommunications and Information Society Day on Tuesday, May 17. “Over the years LIME has had sporadic activities to recognise this day.... but this year we decided to do an activity which would allow anybody who is interested to participate and the person does not even have to be a LIME customer.” The announcement was made in Anguilla by Corporate Marketing Manager, Avon Carty.

This year the Anguilla Renewable Energy Office (AREO) celebrated Earth Day by supporting the implementation of a demonstration organic garden at the Alwyn A. Richardson Primary School, better known as the West End School. Local Organic Farmer Leroy Browne, who was a big hit at last year’s island-wide Earth Day celebration, has developed an initiative to bring organic farming right into the hands of Anguilla’s youth by setting up gardens in the primary schools.

The device carries a cost of just under EC $2,500.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, Utilities and Housing is very much aware of the recent increases in fuel surcharge that have taken place over the last six (6) months - three increases within the last six months to be exact.
