On September 14th, at the Teachers' Resource Centre, the first twenty-one students accepted into the Nurse Cadet Programme took their oath in front of their sole sponsor, Nagico Insurance Ltd; the Permanent Secretary for Education, Mrs. Chanelle Petty-Barrett; and the Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs. Serene Carter Davis. The Programme is the collaborative effort of the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School, the Health Authority of Anguilla and the Ministry of Health and Social Development, with the sole sponsorship of Nagico Insurance Ltd.

The 2010 Leroy Bryan Memorial Domino Tournament culminated with the finals at Grillers Bar over the past weekend.
The tournament commenced on August 20 with seven teams: the Police, The Stars, The Lions, The Warriors, The nature Boys ands The Grillers Boys.
After three weekends of playing against each other, the four top teams went into last Sunday’s semi-finals.

ANGUILLA RECOVERING WELL FROM EARL

Just days away from the fiftieth anniversary of Hurricane Donna, which devastated Anguilla on September 4, 1960, Hurricane Earl, a less intensive storm by the time it reached this area, struck the island a glancing blow, mainly from the northwest, on Monday, August 30. The hurricane, which eventually reached category 4 status as it raced towards the United States, passed through the northern Leeward Islands as a category 1 storm. One international weather service organisation reportedly stated that its centre passed some 12.5 miles north-east of Scrub Island with sustained winds of some 90 mph.

Police: Thefts and Burglaries continue to rise
During the period September 1st to 8th, seven burglaries were reported in the areas of South Hill, Long Ground, Blowing Point Corito and Island Harbour. The items stolen included DVDs, CDs, a home theater system, an IPOD, beach towels, a cordless drill, Dell desktop computers, bar stools and cash. And there were eight thefts reported in the areas of West End, Rey Hill, Wattices, South Hill, George Hill and Stoney Ground where the Items stolen included: a Blackberry cell phone, building materials, a 100 lb gas cylinder, a bicycle, bed, trailer and goats.

Races for each age category included sack races, lime and spoon races, flat races, relays, tug-of-war and more.

An informal agreement between the Wallblake Trust and the Anguilla Heritage Trail has enabled the Heritage Trail Committee to temporarily set up headquarters at the iconic Wallblake House in the Valley. The original plantation main house and outbuildings were restored in 2004 by the Wallblake Trust with the assistance of the Catholic Church and many individuals. |

Executive Sous Chef Viceroy Anguilla Wins Award

Charles Voudouris, Executive Sous Chef at Viceroy Anguilla, was one of ten Caribbean and ten Mexican Chefs, chosen from a field of 150 Chefs to compete in the finals in Mexico City during the period August 9-14. His winning dish was Caribbean 5-Spiced Pork Loin with Pyrat Rum, roasted apples and a scallion potato hash. It had to be completed in two hours and then presented for tasting and critique by a panel of three professional judges.

Community College: Events Planning, Management Course Excites Students

Twenty-three young people, from a wide cross-section of the Anguillian community, have expressed excitement over a just-held course in Events Planning and Management, organised by the Anguilla Community College. Part of the institution’s annual summer programmes, the August 20-24 course included hospitality and tourism personnel, government agencies and other local businesses.
