Children at the Adrian T. Hazell Primary School and the Blowing Point Youth Development Centre are benefitting from separate donations of US$5,000 each presented on their behalf by Chairman and CEO of Cap Juluca, Adam Aron.
Mr. Aron made the presentation to Parliamentary Secretary, Hadyn Hughes, on Friday, September 17.

On Friday July 30th, 2010 The Anguillian carried an article based on a press conference held by the Chief Minister, Hon. Hubert B. Hughes, and his son the Parliamentary Secretary, Haydn Hughes. The press conference was actually held on Tuesday July 28th and as a consequence the news had already been circulated on the various broadcast media that Viceroy Resort was sold to an investment group, Starwood Capital Group (SCG); an MOU was signed; the new buyer would be paying US$ 40 million in taxes; and the Government would be receiving 9% Alien Land Holding Licence fees on every villa sold.

On Monday, September 20th, the Orealia Kelly Primary School Special Needs Department was the recipient of a donation from JTR Advance Security.

In its conference room, on Tuesday 21st September, the Caribbean Commercial Bank presented the Environmental Health Unit (EHU) with a check of EC12, 000.00 for its annual Vector Awareness Program. The presentation ceremony was chaired by the Senior Vector Control Officer, Mr. Alex Fleming, who reminded everyone in attendance that, “This is the Vector Awareness’ eleventh year and some of our programs are the pre–school jingles, primary schools poster and themes, best kept cemeteries, the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS) Campus A inter house spelling B and the ALHCS Campus B Stanley Mussington Essay competition."

As reported elsewhere in The Anguillian, the Anguilla Government and the principals of Starwood Capital have entered into a revised Memorandum of Understanding with respect to the Viceroy Hotel and Residences Project. The arrangement was made through SOFVIII-Hotel ll ANGUILLA HOLDINGS, LLC, a Starwood company formed under the laws of the US State of Delaware, having its principal place of business in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Anguilla has caught up with other OECS Member States whose ministerial, professional and administrative personnel have already benefitted from training in basic subject areas of diplomacy and protocol.

The Vivien Vanterpool Primary School has seen a community come to its aid in the restoration of its buildings and grounds. In a summer that has seen its roofs replaced, classrooms tiled and painted, Principal’s Office made over and the grounds manicured, the Principal and students would like to say thanks to the following businesses and individuals.

Strange as it may seem, discipline in a society is an aspect of culture. One society approaches the discipline process differently from another, but the approach to discipline in every society is a way of passing on society’s values from one generation to another, establishing and maintaining social distance and, in some cases, it is a way of making warriors and heroes since the discipline process can be severe and demanding.

One of the activities which marked the visit to Anguilla by the British Minister for the Overseas Territories, Henry Bellingham MP, was the launching of a Financial Action Task Force.
The event took place, shortly after the Minister’s arrival on Tuesday evening, at a brief ceremony in the Executive Council Chambers.

The British Minister for the Overseas Territories, Mr. Henry Bellingham MP, is to further acquaint himself with the rich socio-economic and political history of Anguilla during the 1840s, 1890s and 1900s by reading the book, Bless Our Forebears, written by noted historian, Colville L. Petty, OBE.

As Anguilla’s team for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi prepare to leave the island next week for India, they have been congratulated by the Minister for the Overseas Territories, Henry Bellingham MP, who also offered best wishes to them.

Now in its eighth year in Anguilla, the Tranquility Jazz Festival has an additional golf component to help jumpstart the island’s tourism industry next season. This time, a new grouping, called Anguilla U-jamaa Productions Ltd., has emerged to produce the 2010 Tranquility Jazz & Golf Festival. It is a joint effort involving past Chairman of the Tourist Board and the Carnival Committee, John Benjamin, and former Festivals Coordinator, Fitzroy Tomlinson, both of who have had a long association as producers, as well as James Connor, an associate organiser.

Members of the Judiciary, the public Bar and the private Bar in Anguilla joined their colleagues in the other jurisdictions of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court on Monday, September 13, for the ceremonial opening of Law Year 2010-2011.

The popular and well sought after book on Anguilla’s revolutionary history is back. Anguilla’s Battle for Freedom 1967-1969, by Colville Petty and Nat Hodge, will be launched at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 5th October 2010 at the Teachers’ Resource Centre in The Valley.

Police: Thefts, burglaries and bestiality

During the period September 8th to 15th five burglaries were reported in the areas of South Hill, Shoal Bay, Sile Bay, Little Harbour and Island Harbour.

The Governor of Anguilla, His Excellency Alistair Harrison, has announced that the Minister for the British Overseas Territories, Mr. Henry Bellingham PM, will be visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands and Anguilla during the period September 19-23.
Speaking at his monthly press conference on Tuesday this week, Governor Harrison explained that it would be Mr. Bellingham’s first visit to any of the Overseas Territories since he took up his appointment following the General Election in the United Kingdom in May this year.

Anguillian Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon, Dr. Ellis Lorenzo Webster, one of the top Otolaryngologists in the South Florida area, is to open a branch of his surgical practice here in Anguilla. Called Island Health Care Centre Ltd., it will be located in the Mason Complex Building, on the Stoney Ground Road, where he is now recruiting nursing personnel.

“I can recall my good friend the member for Island Harbour, the Honourable Mr. Othlyn Vanterpool, saying in the House of Assembly that, ‘The Vivien Vanterpool Primary School is a disaster waiting to happen.’ Mr Vanterpool implied that the school’s problem came about only after the general elections on 15th February when the Anguilla United Movement team came to office.

Caribbean Cable Communications announces the appointment of Curtis A. Richardson to the position of Branch Manager, Anguilla, following Mr. Damien Hughes’ departure to serve as a Minister in the Methodist Church.

Mr. Roger Sauvain, NCB (National Central Bureau) Development Co-coordinator, and Mr. Carlos Rocha, Regional Specialized Officer, both of Interpol visited Anguilla this week to upgrade their systems. In his address to the media Mr. Sauvain said that he was very impressed with the Interpol Office in Anguilla, and is here to recommend the implementation of a new communication tool to bolster the island’s security.
