Ten young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 have begun a month long training seminar in leadership and facilitation. The seminar is a component of the APPLE Theatre programme, an initiative adopted by the Ministry of Social Development, Department of Youth and Culture, to promote values and sustainable development among young people, through involvement in and exposure to the arts.

Students at WISE (Work Initiative for Support in Education) have just completed a three- week course in pottery, both slab and wheel work, that was very much enjoyed by the students. Adam Azaire from St Lucia, who recently ran a course at the prison, was the instructor for the course that was sponsored by the Small Enterprise Development Unit of the Anguilla Development Board and initiated by Wilma Vanterpool. In addition, Azaire waived his tuition fee, making it possible for the three-week course.

The Optimist Club of Anguilla, in keeping with its motto ‘Friend of Youth’ and ‘Bringing out the best in Children’, organized a Positive Poster Competition to give some of our youth the opportunity to communicate their views on our community. The students were asked to express their opinions artistically on the themes ‘drugs’, ‘friendship’, ‘community’, ‘family’ and ‘violence’. Students from the Pupil Referral Unit (P.R.U.) and the Workshop Initiative for Support in Education (W.I.S.E.) were specifically targeted for this project and the response was overwhelming. There were a total of 30 posters submitted. The competition took place during the second term of school and was judged by artists Optimist Collette Jones, Mr Adam Azaire and Ms Lynn Bernbaum during the Easter Break.

The National Council of Women is now operating its Art Gallery (formerly Arts and Crafts Centre) in the newly-built Brooks & Sons Complex in The Valley, just down from the People’s Market. The relocation is to facilitate Government’s use of the original site to accommodate a new building to house the nearby Education Department.

In 1989, the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Annette Whittaker, had a wonderful idea. Knowing that the island had many talented ladies she decided to bring them together and at their first meeting The Anguilla Craft Group was formed. Since then the ladies of the ACG have gotten together to meet, exchange ideas and do creative crafts. Not only are handcrafts, friendships, smiles, laughter and camaraderie crafted there but dedication of their talents towards community service has been the main purpose of the ACG.

Renowned architect and one of the owners of Covecastles Resort in Anguilla, Myron Goldfinger, and his wife, June, an interior and fashion wear designer as well as a graphics artist, have awarded eight students at the Alwyn Allison Primary School in West End who participated in an art competition.

A large crowd of persons appreciative of the art of Lynne Bernbaum were present at the opening of her latest exhibition “Verticals” held on Thursday December 6 at her gallery and studio at George Hill Landing.

Located in Tomac Plaza Mall, Water Swamp road, DJAMBARA ART GALLERY is one of the latest new projects initiated in Anguilla by Mr. Adama DIALLO, an African-born gentleman from Senegal. He is well traveled and has lived in the Caribbean for 20 years.

Louise Brooks, a well-known Anguillian artist, has opened her own Art Gallery on the Shoal Bay Road, a heavily-travelled area by tourists.
Alak Art Gallery, housed in an attractively-designed and new building constructed by her husband, is a place of excellence and fully stocked with an assortment of paintings which any art lover would want to own.

The exhibition of Peg Gregory’s paintings at The Studio attracted a number of persons at the opening evening. Displayed are some 26 oil paintings of Anguilla scenes including beach scenes, flowers, trees, birds, boats and homes.

Visitors with a passion for art are streaming into Island Harbour to view the frequent exhibitions mounted at Art Café, a gallery owned and operated by Janus Pavluk who, in addition to his own business, is Chairman of the Anguilla International Arts Festival.

Art Café at Coconut Paradise Building at Island Harbour is fast becoming a centre of attraction for many. It is one of the island’s finest art galleries, well laid out, and boasts an attractive bar (tucked away in one corner), and a boutique and will soon be an outlet for the island’s philatelic bureau. To add to its attractiveness, the floor of the building is tiled with very colourful cuttings of local rock.

A number of inmates at Her Majesty’s Prison in Anguilla showcased their talent on Wednesday when they mounted an exhibition just outside the facility. They not only attracted members of the media and the general public but purchasers as well who thought their work was an excellent display of talent and commitment.

Art Café is Anguilla’s newest gallery and is located in the Coconut Paradise Building at Island Harbour. It is owned by Elizabeth Chronicka-Pavluk and Janus Pavluk. The current exhibition is an exciting one with oil and mixed media paintings by talented Spanish artist Rosa Guasch. The building has undergone considerable renovations and is a spacious gallery with ample space for displays on the walls and interior panels.

French artist Antoine Chapon has an exhibition of his paintings at the Devonish Art Gallery at West End. The 33 paintings are mostly sea scenes of the tropics with boats, beaches, palms, houses and views typical of Anguilla and the Caribbean.

The Anguilla National Creative Arts Association is pleased to announce an eight-week course in the making of objects and furniture from bamboo.

In this photo, Khondah Hazell, a Sixth Form student at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School, appears to be simply using her painting skills to adorn a portion of the inside wall of the school’s perimeter fence.

The work of two visiting artists forms part of the current exhibition at the Devonish Gallery along with that of resident Judy Guthrie.
