Rape

Rape is one of the most revolting criminal acts. We have all heard of the devastating after-effects which plague the victims, sometimes for life. However, while we usually associate rape with an act of violence and force, in many cases it is just the opposite. Statistics show that many rapes are committed by persons well known to the victim.

A woman’s place is in the House…of Assembly, that is, and there is no plausible excuse that Anguilla can make in the 21st Century to explain why there are no women in the Anguilla House of Assembly. On the contrary, I can think of over three thousand reasons why there should be at least five women in the House, and I am one of them (the reasons, not the women in the House).

In the past 40 years there has been an increase in the number of individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. This increase has also occurred in teenagers as well. Adolescence brings its own special challenges to any family and diabetes adds another layer to these trying times.

The majority of pregnancies end successfully. Despite the improvements in medical technology and increase knowledge of physicians a small number of pregnancies do not end well. In all countries of the world a few pregnancies end with a baby’s death or with the birth of a baby who is handicapped. This is often devastating to both parent and the health team caring for the pregnant woman.

As the political temperature rises – reaches fever pitch – everything our politicians do is given a political twist. For example, Chief Minister Osbourne Fleming recently announced that he was going back to the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church, to which he once belonged, and dey say he playing politics – dat after elections people ain’t goin see where he rope drag.

This is a testimony of what His Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie I means to me. I grew up in a Christian household. The family was an extended one in which we enjoyed the privilege and endured the pain of having grandparents who played matriarchal and patriarchal roles to instill values that are indelible.

It is always a great relief to our people, businesses and the economy when our up-market tourism industry is up and running. It is like rain to a parched land bringing forth refreshment, new plant life, growth and productivity.

Terrorists in Anguilla

WAR is not only a pertinent issue in the United States of America, but it is quickly becoming a very real issue in Anguilla. Terrorists not only come from far away countries, but reside in our once peaceful Anguilla. Bombs are not the only weapons of choice for terrorists, but also the gun and the knife. Terrorism is not only an issue talked about, but it is becoming our reality.

Chronic constipation is a common problem in childhood, although it is frequently not reported. It commonly not only affects the child but the entire family.

Last week’s article elicited so many positive comments that I must thank you for letting me know of your shared concern. The day after I submitted the article, I got to work just in time to see two small children alone in a car parked with the key in the ignition and the radio on. It will obviously take more than writing and talking to deal with this issue but let us encourage one another and take whatever initiatives we can, to minimize the risks at which we carelessly place young lives.

November 14 is World Diabetes Day. The day is used to increase awareness of diabetes, a serious condition that is rapidly increasing in many countries including Anguilla. The theme for this year is “Fight Obesity - Prevent Diabetes”.

My new office is located in a two-storey complex in one of the busiest parts of The Valley. From that vantage point, whether I want to or not, I can see a lot of vehicular traffic on any given working day.

If I did not promise myself to stay out of politics until after the elections, I would have mentioned how Edison Baird (Eddy) called Haydn Hughes a suicide bomber and said that Anne Edwards got to lose some 30 or 40 lbs in order to beat him in 2005. And that, as the campaign heats up, Anne will see “how barley grow.”

The Bible is a storehouse of phrases and statements which, though ancient, are in fact timeless and applicable to varying situations in our times today. Take the above phrase, for example.

I think I should mention in passing that the quality of presentations made by ANSA’s candidates at their party’s launching, in The Valley, on Monday evening 18th October 2004, if maintained is likely to contribute to the uplifting of the quality of political debate in Anguilla during the upcoming election campaign.
