the days have hurtled by quickly since then, but Thursday, August 26, 2010, was a special day in the life of Charles Christopher Gumbs (Charley), of the Quarter. On that date he celebrated his 100th birthday which made him the oldest man in Anguilla. It was a three-part grand occasion which comprised a Thanksgiving Service at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, a luncheon at DaVida Restaurant at Crocus Bay and a cocktail party at Serenity Resort at Shoal Bay.

Well-known couple, James (Sonnie) Ruan, and his wife, Easlyn Ruan (formerly Leerdam), of Mount Fortune have just celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

The celebration started on Saturday, August 21, when they attended the Mount Fortune Seventh-day Adventist Church, in which they are longstanding members, accompanied by their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. There they were specially recognised and commended by Pastor Virgil Sams and congregation.

The death was announced on Friday, February 5, of Teacher Isa Louise Lake, of The Quarter, at the age of 95 years, who gave a substantial portion of her life to state, church and community.

She served as a Teacher from an early age and travelled from East End to West End on her bicycle on primitive roads, and through sunshine or rain, and was never a day late at the elementary schools. She was a strict disciplinarian, only desiring the best for her pupils. She earned the respect of all parents for her interest in their children.

Charlie Fleming, who is fondly remembered, died on Monday this week, December 28, at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. He was 68.

Obituary: MR. RUSSELL WEBSTER

The death has been announced of Mr. Russell Webster who was a leading figure in the 1967 Anguilla Revolution. He was found dead at his residence at Island Harbour on Sunday evening, after having been seen in the district the day before.

Mr. Webster was among a number of Anguillians awarded a Medal of Honour and a Queen Certificate for their contribution to the freedom movement for separation from St. Kitts-Nevis. He served as a co-opted member of the early Anguilla Council then headed by Revolutionary Leader, James Ronald Webster. He is listed in the island’s archives among the members in a 1970 historic photograph which has been a much-sought after artifact over the years.
