As expected the rise in cost of fuel at the pumps has been met by demands by taxi drivers across the region to increase prices. Strikes have already erupted in Guyana and strikes have been threatened in St Lucia.

Caribbean Cable Communications in Anguilla announced on Wednesday, September 7, that all their customers are now routed on their microwave system that makes use of the SMITCOM fibre link to Puerto Rico. Additionally, the Company has retained its satellite link to ensure redundancy should there be any problems with the microwave.

The well publicized soaring oil prices are now hitting home at the pumps for users across the Caribbean with prices rising in Antigua, St Lucia and set to rise in Grenada and St Kitts. Fuel taxes are an important source of revenue for OECS governments and up until recently many governments have been holding off on passing on increases, effectively reducing revenue into the government coffers and subsidizing distributors and consumers.

A press release issued by Digicel on August 24th, states that the Government of Anguilla has approved that Company’s acquisition of Cingular Wireless’ Anguilla. The Company Looks forward to offering competition and international roaming services.

2. Securities Markets and the Development of the Eastern Caribbean Securities market.

Two telecommunications companies, AT&T and Digicel, have submitted bids to the Anguilla Government for mobile licences in the 1900 megahertz band. This is the last of three cellular service licences to be made available. It is not expected that any more will be offered for at least five years, according to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications, Kenn Banks.

The upmarket tourism industry in Anguilla has been given another boost with the opening of the Galleria, a new enterprise of World Art and Antiques, the latest investment by Nik and Christi Douglas. They already have antiquity establishments in the Old Factory Complex in the Valley and at Cap Juluca and have now expanded their business to meet the needs of the growing market.

National Bank of Anguilla Ltd., announced on Wednesday, January 28, that effective immediately, NBA Convenience Cardholders are able to pay their ANGLEC utility bills via NBA’s Telebanking Service. NBA’s Bill Payment feature is the latest feature added to NBA’s 24-hour telephone banking service. In addition to receiving information on their NBA accounts or transferring funds between accounts with NBA’s Telebanking Service, customers now have the added convenience of paying their ANGLEC bills.

The FirstCaribbean International Bank Win Win Campaign has come to an end and it created a true win win situation for both customers and staff.

Weblinks, a local teleommunications company and Digicel, a company with branches in various parts of the Caribbean, have submitted bids for a licence to supply a 1,800 megahertz mobile service in Anguilla.
